Liptovske Sliace: Teplica Spring, Travertine and Folklore

Liptovske Sliace combines an unusual natural phenomenon with trails, cycling and vibrant Slovak culture. At the centre is the Teplica spring, also known as Čertovica. Its constant temperature of 16°C prevents the stream flowing from it from freezing in winter. The constant temperature makes the spring particularly interesting for planning a winter trip.

Natural landscape around Teplica

Teplica is a mofette spring from which gases escape. The shape of the travertine hill is also striking: it resembles a volcano with a crater. Those interested in geological features can therefore discover a landform here that differs markedly from an ordinary spring. The surrounding area also includes the Sliačske travertíny Nature Reserve. It contains a small marsh with characteristic flora and fauna.

The Sliačske travertíny Nature Reserve can be reached from Vyšný Sliač via a narrow asphalt road. There is also a blue-marked hiking trail for orientation in the area. It leads from the “Lipt.Sliače,Vyšný Sliač,garáž” bus stop to the nature reserve and onwards to the Teplica spring.

Hiking, cycling and different travel plans

Those travelling on foot can use the blue-marked trail, which provides a direct connection between the bus stop, nature reserve and spring. Cyclists can plan a considerably longer route: the 68 km blue-marked Vlkolínec–Pribylina MTB route follows dirt roads through Liptovské Sliače towards Partizánska Ľupča. This route involves a different type of trip planning than the trail to Teplica. The route length and its course along dirt roads should therefore be taken into account when choosing your own day’s itinerary.

Folklore and historical details

Liptovské Sliače is shaped not only by travertine and trails. The local folklore ensembles Sliačanka and the children’s group Sliačanček preserve local folk traditions, songs and dances and present them at domestic and international folklore festivals. In 2026, the Liptovské dni matky folklore festival was also held for the 15th time at the Pažite amphitheatre in Liptovské Sliače.
