Vrbová Nad Váhom – Natural Landscape, the Váh and Feszty Culture

Vrbová Nad Váhom combines protected landscape, the Váh River and an unusually strong connection to Feszty. For your travel decision, this creates a place where nature observation, water sports, cycling and cultural history offer different ways to explore the area. At the same time, the historical character of individual Feszty sites remains important: not every documented site should be understood as a preserved or currently accessible building.

Listové jazero and the waterside landscape

The Listové jazero nature reserve is located in the cadastral territories of the municipalities of Nesvady and Vrbová nad Váhom. Since 1988, it has been designated to protect a rare habitat for waterfowl and wading birds in the Danubian Lowland. The natural vegetation along the shores has the character of a floodplain forest. This means that the focus of this landscape is not an ordinary lakeside setting, but rather the combination of wetland, waterside vegetation and documented protection for waterfowl and wading birds.

The Váh, cycling and fishing

The Váh offers opportunities for water sports in Vrbová nad Váhom. Another perspective is provided by the embankment along the Váh, which offers good conditions for cycling tourism. Those who want to shape their stay not only around cultural sites but also around activities by the water will find two clearly distinct options: water sports on the river and cycling along the embankment.

The area’s connection with the water also includes the Váh-Danube floodplain. It is well known and popular with anglers throughout the district.

Feszty sites in Kingyes and Zlatá Osada

The cultural history of Vrbová nad Váhom is closely connected with Árpád Feszty. He used a small farmhouse in the marshlands of Kingyes as a retreat from the bustle of the capital and created numerous paintings there. This also included part of the design sketches for the panorama “The Arrival of the Hungarians”.

The former Feszty House is located next to a small lake in Kingyes. Its historical status must be taken into account explicitly: in 2014, the former Feszty homestead was no longer preserved. The surviving building of the Feszty studio was also gradually falling into disrepair that same year. The Feszty connections are therefore particularly suitable for placing the site in its cultural and historical context; they should not automatically be understood as evidence of a fully preserved ensemble.

Another named Feszty site is Árpád Feszty’s hunting lodge in the Zlatá Osada district of Vrbová nad Váhom. Together with the historical connections of Kingyes, it forms a distinct cultural focus alongside the natural landscape of Listové jazero and the activities on the Váh.

Local sights and cuisine

Local sights in Vrbová nad Váhom include the monument to the victims of the Second World War. The Roman Catholic church in Vrbová nad Váhom was built in 1996. In addition, the memorial wooden column erected in 1998 by the Most priateľstva microregional association commemorates another local initiative.

The cuisine of Vrbová nad Váhom is considered a blend of Hungarian and Slovak traditions.
