Chotín – Archaeology, Educational Trail and Chotínske piesky
Accommodation in Chotín
Chotín combines an unusually rich archaeological heritage with an educational trail, a historic church and a distinctive sandy landscape. If, during your trip to Slovakia, you would like to get to know not only well-known cities but also smaller places with their own character, Chotín offers several different points of interest: you can explore Celtic, Thracian and Roman traces, follow the educational trail in either direction, or include the natural surroundings of Chotínske piesky and Chotínske jazero in your plans.
Archaeological traces from several eras
The Disznólegelö archaeological site contains a Thracian burial ground from the Early Iron Age. A total of 310 inhumation graves and 152 cremation graves have been identified there. The Felsö - Kenderföld site contains a significant Celtic burial ground with 47 graves, including 4 cremation graves and 43 inhumation graves. Another site is Delihegy, where a large settlement from the Roman period is located.
The Chotín burial ground is also one of the largest burial grounds of the Hallstatt culture; up to 1,000 graves are presumed to be located there. These different eras make Chotín particularly interesting for travellers who want to discover history not only in a single building but through the combination of several archaeological themes. The Podunajské Museum in Komárno also displays archaeological material from a Celtic burial ground in Chotín, including a bronze armlet decorated with filigree ornaments.
Church, museum and local culture
The Calvinist church in Chotín was built in 1792 in the Classical style with several Baroque architectural elements. It was repaired between 1857 and 1862; with minor later alterations and repairs, it has been preserved to this day. The church has a wooden pulpit with a sounding board, built in 1857 and decorated with Hungarian folk motifs.
Chotín is also home to the Lilla Gallery and Village Museum, the municipal museum. It houses an ethnological collection belonging to the retired teacher Ernő Zajos, as well as various exhibitions. As part of local cultural heritage education, schoolchildren were able to learn about traditional activities such as hemp cultivation, bread baking, rope making, broom making, wood carving and weaving. In this way, the history of everyday life and crafts complements the archaeological sites with a closer look at traditional activities.
Educational trail and practical orientation
The educational trail to Chotín’s sights can be walked in either direction. The numbering of the stops is intended for orientation and precise location on the map, not to indicate the order. Delihegy is one of the stops on this educational trail. You therefore do not have to plan the stops in a prescribed sequence, but can follow the map and your personal interests.
Two distances to the educational trail have been recorded for arrival: a local bus stop on the Komárno–Štúrovo route is 200 m from the educational trail. Chotín railway station is 2.5 km from the educational trail to Chotín’s sights. When choosing your accommodation, this information can help you decide between travelling by bus or train and can assist with planning your day.
Chotínske piesky and Chotínske jazero
The Chotínske piesky nature reserve has also been an area of European importance since 2004. It comprises inland sand communities with numerous endangered plant and animal species. For nature enthusiasts, this creates a clear contrast with the burial grounds and historic buildings: the focus is not on traces of human settlement but on the distinctive habitats of the sandy landscape.
Rest areas have been established around Chotínske jazero. Fishing spots have also been designated at Chotínske jazero. These two details help you mentally assign cultural sightseeing and time spent by the water to different parts of your travel day, without mixing up the archaeological and natural-history themes.
Choose accommodation according to your travel plans
When searching for a hotel in Chotín, you should first decide whether the focus of your trip is on archaeology and culture, the educational trail or nature observation. For the educational trail, the bus stop 200 m away and the railway station 2.5 km away are useful points of reference.
For further orientation, you can also place Hurbanovo, Kolárovo, Lipové, Komárno, Bodza, Radvaň Nad Dunajom, Zlatná Na Ostrove and Patince in context.
