Komárno: Fortress, Culture and Thermal Baths

Fortress and Historical Traces

Pevnosť Komárno is part of the most extensive fortress system in Central Europe, which extends across the Slovak Republic and Hungary. The oldest part, known as Stará pevnosť, was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. An important detail to note for your planning is that Pevnosť Komárno can only be visited as part of a guided tour with a guide for safety reasons.

The rest of the cultural route through Komárno also offers several clearly distinct themes. Nádvorie Európy presents characteristic features of architecture from 36 European countries and regions in one place. Podunajské múzeum has exhibitions and displays in three buildings in the centre of Komárno. This museum also includes a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments in Bastion No. 6 of the fortress system on the outskirts of Komárno. The term lapidarium refers to a collection of stone monuments from Roman times.

A statue of György Klapka, a representative of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/49, dominates Námestie generála Klapku. The Marian Column of the Holy Trinity, also called Súsošie Najsvätejšej Trojice or Trojičný stĺp, dates from 1715. It commemorates the plague epidemic of 1710 to 1711 and the end of the Kuruc wars. Construction of Kostol sv. Ondreja church lasted from 1723 to 1763.

Thermal Water and Recreation

Termálne kúpalisko Komárno complements the historical impressions with a comprehensive wellness area. In summer, visitors can use a 2.5-hectare site with seven different pools. The baths also include a Finnish sauna with a capacity of up to 20 people. A year-round outdoor pool has a movable roof that can be partially opened or closed. Cycling Paths and Nature along the Váh

For an active addition, the EuroVelo 6 cycling route runs along Pevnosť Komárno. There are cycling, inline skating and running routes around Mŕtve rameno Váhu and the Váh. Designated picnic areas are available at Mŕtve rameno Váhu; Mŕtve rameno Váhu, located on the Váh, also offers opportunities for recreation in nature.
