Kolárovo: Water Mill, Culture and Danube Landscape

Kolárovo combines an exceptional technical attraction with a multifaceted cultural landscape along the Little Danube. The floating water mill makes the strongest impression: it is the last floating mill in Slovakia, stands on a branch of the Little Danube and is open to the general public as a national cultural monument.

Floating Water Mill and Nature Trail

A covered bridge built entirely of wood leads to the water mill. The Water Milling Museum is located on the grounds. The exhibits include, among other things, a unique machine for making fishing nets, which is considered one of the first of its kind in the world. The mill provides clear timing information for your visit: it welcomes visitors from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with guided tours taking place every 15 minutes.

The nature trail at the water mill is aimed primarily at visitors to the mill and extends your stay in Kolárovo in nature. It provides information about the local fauna and flora as well as the history associated with Kolárovo. It also provides information about the natural, landscape and historical values of the area surrounding the Lodný mlyn national cultural monument site. This means that a visit focuses not only on the building and its technology, but also on the branch of the river and the landscape in which the mill stands.

Churches, Houses and Living Traditions

Kolárovo’s historic character includes several different examples of architecture and cultural heritage. The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1723–1724 on the site of an older Gothic church and enlarged in 1772. Its interior features a late Baroque barrel vault. The Chapel of Saint Rosalia is a Baroque building from the 1750s; its tower was added at the end of the 19th century.

The House of Folk Traditions is a reconstructed old farmhouse with historically styled contemporary furnishings. It provides space for various folk crafts, art workshops and activities dedicated to maintaining and preserving folk traditions. In addition, the municipal cultural centre organizes several exhibitions each year featuring works by renowned amateur artists, painters and photographers. It is also a co-organizer of Kolárovská lýra, an international amateur singing competition, and works to preserve and promote local folk traditions as well as Slovak, Hungarian and European cultural values.

A local tradition dating back more than a hundred years is the Turíčny dance procession. It is regarded as one of the municipality’s most important social events and an important means of preserving Hungarian identity. Another historical destination is the ruins of Žabí hrad, originally called Hrad Mieru. They are located in a wooded wetland near the confluence of the Little Danube and the Váh.

The Little Danube and Regional Excursion Options

The watery landscape also shapes orientation around Kolárovo. The entire Little Danube is navigable from Vrakuňa, a district of Bratislava, to Kolárovo. In the wider region, the Georgina family winery offers wine and cheese tastings by prior arrangement. The Mŕtve rameno Váhu stop on the Komárno–Kolárovo route offers water bicycles and bicycle rental.
