Bajč: Church, Estate History and the Pribetský Stream
Bajč combines sacred architecture, estate history, archaeological traces and a landscape shaped by waterways. This makes the village especially suitable for you if, during a trip through Slovakia, you would like to discover not only individual sights but also the historical layers of a place. Key themes include the Church of St John the Baptist, the settlements of Chrasť and Vlkanovo, the Pribetský Stream and Bajč’s recorded railway history.
Church and archbishopric history
The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist is the oldest building in Bajč. It was converted between 1827 and 1831 by Archbishop Alexander Rudnay from an archbishop’s château built in 1790. The building has a single nave and is designed in the Classical style. A pink marble commemorative plaque is located above the entrance.
The church also preserves a distinctive detail inside: it contains 14 Stations of the Cross dating from around 1960 by Víghová of Bajč. Together with its construction history, they make the church a place where architecture, local memory and the history of the archbishop’s estate are directly connected.
Chrasť and the historic estate settlements
In the settlement of Chrasť stands the manor house of the administrator of the archbishop’s estate, built by Ján Simor in the Neo-Classical style in the 1880s. It served this administrative purpose until 1945. The historic surroundings also include a granary dating from 1837. Its façades are articulated by pilasters as well as string courses and cornices made of unplastered fired bricks.
Archbishop Ján Simor had the archbishop’s summer house expanded after 1867 by adding another storey to an older building; it also had a private chapel for the archbishop. The two-storey building has an L-shaped floor plan and a glazed pillar veranda with a conservatory. These different buildings provide several perspectives on Bajč’s local history: administration, living quarters and religiously oriented residence appear as separate but documented components of the former archbishop’s environment.
Archaeological traces in Ragonya and Vlkanovo
Those interested in archaeology will find several widely separated traces from different periods in Bajč. At the Ragonya site, a Lengyel grave containing a mass sacrifice and almost 100 inhumation graves from a cemetery of the older Bronze Age Hurbanovo Group were discovered. The finds thus point to a long history of settlement, without suggesting that the individual periods should be merged into a single historical narrative.
Iron objects dating from the 11th to the 13th century were found in the settlement of Vlkanovo. The remains of a damaged Romanesque church from the 12th century can also be identified there. An extensive Late Lengyel settlement was also discovered beside the former brickworks near the Vlkanovo estate. It includes pottery with furrow-stamp decoration belonging to the Bajč-Retz cultural group.
The Pribetský Stream and its historic railway connection
Along the section of the Pribetský Stream belonging to the municipality of Bajč, the banks are mainly lined with poplars and willows. This section is also known for the presence of amphibians and waterfowl. The stream thus complements the built and archaeological evidence with a landscape aspect of the village.
Another historic feature is the railway. Bajč was one of the stations on the Komárno–Nové Zámky railway line, which opened to public traffic on 10 May 1910. The Bajč railway station building was also built in 1910. The rectangular, two-storey building with a central avant-corps and a triangular masonry gable has been preserved almost in its original form.
