Kravany nad Dunajom: Danube Riverside and Manor Houses

Kravany nad Dunajom combines the landscape of the Danube Lowland with a distinctive cultural and historical character. The municipality lies on a low Danube terrace on the left bank; in the southern part of its territory, a floodplain with former river channels, riverbanks and alluvial forest extends across the landscape. Danube floodplains, views and summer by the river

The observation tower in Kravany nad Dunajom offers a panorama of the surrounding landscape. Together with its location on the Danube terrace, this provides a view of the distinctive connection between the higher settlement area and the lower-lying floodplain. In the southern part of the municipality, former river channels, riverbanks and alluvial forest shape the landscape. At the Danube, you can swim or sunbathe in summer. Thus, during the warm season, you can enjoy both expansive views of the landscape from the observation tower and direct time by the water.

Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary

A central cultural and historical landmark is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The building was constructed around 1232 as a late Romanesque church. Around 1712, Count Ferenc Gyulay renovated and redesigned the church in the Baroque style; in 1936, it was renovated to reflect its Baroque appearance. The present-day description of the building therefore brings together several clearly identifiable historical layers without losing sight of its original late Romanesque origins. The church also contains two red marble tomb slabs. One bears an inscription about the noble de Lábathlan family, dated 1400. A visit to this site therefore combines the architectural history of the church with a concrete testimony to the medieval history of the nobility.

Manor houses and local history

Kravany nad Dunajom is also known as the “village of manor houses.” The name refers to the fact that aristocratic families built many manor houses and farmsteads there. A particularly striking example stands next to the Hroššo farmstead: it is the largest manor house in the village by volume. Sándor Braun and Józsa Hazai built it in the last quarter of the 19th century. After Gustáv Láng acquired the estate in 1917, he had the building redesigned and unified in the Art Nouveau style. The manor house thus complements the church’s religious history with a second local history shaped by farmsteads and aristocratic families.

Statues and small religious monuments

On the banks of the Danube, opposite the Kuzmik family farmstead, stands a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was erected in 1843, restored in 1902 and mounted on a marble pedestal. At the western end of the village, in the direction of Dunamocs, there is also a wayside shrine known by the locals as the Láng Chapel. It was erected in the 1920s; its barred niche contains an image of the Virgin Mary. Another chapel commemorates a former Lourdes grotto. A local family had it built out of gratitude for their son’s recovery. Such small memorial sites complement the larger buildings and make it clear that the history of Kravany nad Dunajom is also reflected in individual statues, chapels and family memorials.
