Okoličná Na Ostrove: Churches, Manor Houses and Landscape

Churches and historical heritage

The Roman Catholic Church of St Augustine was built in 1816 on the site of an older, presumably Romanesque church and extended in 1830. Inside, there is a marble baptismal font with a repoussé copper lid in Baroque-Classical forms dating from the 1830s. The gallery houses an organ made by the Viktor Moszny company of Bratislava in the second half of the 19th century.

The Reformed Church was built between 1801 and 1804 in the Classical style and is considered the largest Calvinist church on Žitný ostrov. Among its preserved furnishings is a Gothic chalice from the 15th century, which was later remodelled in 1618. The historical picture is complemented by several manor houses: the Erdélyi family manor house was built in the 1860s next to Zoltán Erdélyi’s vineyard in the Neoclassical style. The Csorba family manor house was built around the middle of the 18th century, extended in the middle of the 19th century and remodelled in the Classical style. The Csontos family manor house was built at the beginning of the 19th century; the Hungarian writer Mór Jókai lived there several times during his youth.

Archaeology and protected landscape

The area’s older history is also documented. Archaeological finds from the Roman period were discovered in the cadastral territory of Okoličná na Ostrove. A burial ground dating from the period of the Avar Khaganate was also discovered there. These traces make the region interesting for travellers who want to understand historical development not only through buildings but also through archaeological evidence.

Okoličná na Ostrove is one of the cadastral territories associated with the protected Natura 2000 site of Ostrovné lúky. The open lowland landscape of Ostrovné lúky is an important habitat for the breeding and survival of the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus). The steppe, forest-steppe and agricultural landscape also provides suitable habitat for the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor) and the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). Thus, alongside the churches and manor houses, a landscape theme takes centre stage, offering a distinct perspective particularly for travellers interested in natural history.

The international Podunajská cycle route runs along the Danube approximately 8 km south of the boundary of the cadastral territory of Okoličná na Ostrove.
