Patince: Thermal Waters, the Danube and Cultural Heritage

Patince combines thermal bathing traditions, the Danube landscape and Slovak cultural heritage. If you would like to combine relaxation with water experiences, cycling and special historic sites during your trip to Slovakia, you will find several clearly distinct options here: from the thermal park and the Danube floodplain forests to the Romanesque church and a restored steam pumping station.

Thermal Water and Water Areas

Patince Thermal Park has four indoor pools and two outdoor pools. The thermal spring emerges from a depth of 160 to 170 metres and has a temperature of 27°C at the source. In the summer thermal baths, the pools are filled exclusively with water from this thermal spring; the water temperature there ranges from 24 to 33°C.

The 0.5-hectare Rímske jazero protected area lies around the spring. The warm springs of Patince and baths from Roman times are already mentioned in written records from the 13th century. Today’s waterscape also includes a natural body of water in the recreation area, which is used for outdoor swimming and boating. The 1.4-hectare boating lake has small islands and is used for water sports, pedal boating and fishing.

The Danube, Floodplain Forests and Cycling Routes

Patince lies within the protected Dunajské luhy bird protection area. It includes the main channel of the Danube and the floodplain forests on the left bank. The natural aquatic habitats provide suitable breeding conditions for little egrets, little bitterns, common terns, garganeys and redshanks. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by the water, but also by the protected habitats along the river.

For cycle tourists, the Danube Cycling Route runs through Patince on the Komárno–Iža–Patince–Radvaň nad Dunajom–Moča–Kravany nad Dunajom route and forms part of EuroVelo 6. The section from Komárno to Kravany nad Dunajom is 30.34 kilometres long. Of this, 18 kilometres consist of a developed cycling facility and 12.34 kilometres of a marked route. In addition, the green-marked cycling route 5111 leads as a short branch from EuroVelo 6 to Patince and to the recreation area near the municipality.

A red post on the banks of the Danube marks the southernmost point of Slovakia. Marina Patince regularly organises sightseeing boat trips on the Danube. These usually operate along the Patince–Moča route and back and last approximately one hour. This allows you to experience the river both from the cycle path and from the water.

Church, Technology and Regional History

The Roman Catholic Church of St Vendelín is a stone, single-nave Romanesque church from the 13th century. In 1776, it was remodelled in the Baroque style. It is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic under number 12 047/1. The raised chancel was partly built from reused building material dating from Roman times, giving the structure a distinctive historical layering.

Another prominent site is the Patince Steam Pumping Station. The building, erected in 1897, is a unique technical monument and preserves its original machinery. The fully restored pumping station is open to the public and houses an exhibition on the history of water management in the region.

Events on the Danube

Dni mostu priateľstva takes place annually in summer; the Slovak host location alternates among the participating municipalities. The event includes an evening ritual during which candles float on the Danube. The celebration of the connection between the villages along the Danube has been held since 1996 and begins in Patince and Neszmély.
