Lipové amid canals and lowland landscapes

Lipové is located in the Žitný ostrov plain, a flat lowland at an elevation of 105 to 109 m above sea level. A relatively dense network of canals runs through the cadastral area, significantly shaping the character of the landscape. The deforested, flat cadastral area covers 1,058 ha. The underlying geology is dominated by gravel and sands of the “kolárovskej formácie”; these are complemented by layers of fluvial Danube sediments as well as alluvial and floodplain soils, which are locally saline. Lipové therefore features a landscape whose character is shaped less by differences in elevation than by waterways, open spaces and the geological history of the Danube.

The canal-rich surroundings are suitable for rural tourism. At the same time, the lowland terrain and comparatively low traffic volumes on the local roads provide very good conditions for cycling tourism. Those who explore Lipové by bicycle encounter a flat landscape in which natural areas and agriculturally shaped land alternate closely with one another.

The Ostrovné lúky natural area

The cadastral area of Lipové belongs to the Ostrovné lúky Natura 2000 site. Ostrovné lúky is an open lowland habitat of great importance for the breeding and survival of the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus). Its steppe, forest-steppe and agricultural landscape also provides suitable living conditions for the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor) and the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). Another designated natural area is the Bodza–Lipové oxbow, also known as Zsemlekes, which is among the most valuable tourist sites in Lipové.

History and village character

Lipové was established after the 1920 land reform under the name Hodžovo. Settlers from all over Slovakia founded the settlement. This history of its origins is part of the village character, as are the surviving architectural reminders of different eras: the Protestant bell tower was built in the 1920s, while the Kálnokyovská kúria and the associated barn on the Terem farmstead date from the 19th century.

Typical architecture in Lipové includes semi-detached houses and the barns standing beside them in Rakotáš. Local events are also part of the culture described here: Lipové hosts annual Mother’s Day celebrations. Community and cultural events organized by the municipality also include a goulash-cooking competition.

Transport connections and further activities

The nearest railway station is located about 5 km away in Zemianska Olča, on line 131 from Bratislava via Dunajská Streda to Komárno. The nearest bus stop for long-distance buses is likewise about 5 km away in Tôň.

Within the cadastral area of Lipové, immediately next to the municipality of Zemianska Olča, the former gravel pit site was converted into the CARP PARADISE fishing water for recreational fishing. When choosing accommodation, Lipové therefore serves as a starting point for a range of interests: open lowland nature, cycling, rural tourism, cultural and historical landmarks, and the designated landscape areas.
