Veľké Kosihy: Salt Meadows, Danube Floodplains and Culture

Veľké Kosihy combines an unusual landscape with vivid evidence of regional history. The cadastral area brings together the protected habitats of Dunajské luhy, salt meadow communities, a historic pumping station and Neoclassical buildings. If you would like to combine nature observation, local history and documented projects for local orientation on your trip, the village offers several different starting points.

Salt Meadows and Danube Floodplains

At the Mostové site, the cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy contains salt marsh or salt meadow communities of European importance. They are among the most endangered habitats. The salt meadows near Mostové provide a habitat for many endangered plant and animal species and give the landscape a distinctly different character from wooded or purely agricultural areas.

The cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy belongs to the Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site. This includes the main course of the Danube and the floodplain forests on its left bank. The area’s natural aquatic habitats also include rivers and swamps. They provide suitable conditions for the breeding of waterbirds such as the little bittern, common tern, garganey and spotted redshank. For your choice of destination, this primarily means that Veľké Kosihy represents a landscape whose distinctive character lies in sensitive habitats and water-shaped natural features.

Pumping Station, Church and Manor House

A prominent historical detail is the old pumping station. It was built into the Danube embankment in 1856 and was part of the drainage system of Žitný ostrov. The small single-storey building of the steam pumping station has not been operational since 1965. The facility therefore forms part of the technical history of the landscape while also highlighting the importance of drainage and water regulation for the region.

The village centre also offers several points of cultural and historical interest. A Neoclassical manor house in Veľké Kosihy was commissioned by Károly Zámory around 1830 next to the Calvinist church. The church itself was built in the Neoclassical style in 1819. Its interior has wooden Protestant galleries on two sides. The Calvinist church is considered to be well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose. The manor house and church thus represent two closely neighbouring but differently dated elements of the village’s history.

Local Orientation and Documented Projects

The development of local infrastructure included the replacement of the old bus stop in the centre of Veľké Kosihy as part of a modernisation project. A municipal footpath project also provided for the construction of a total of 264 m of footpaths. The project also included a 6.5 m-long pedestrian bridge over the Lél–Kosihy canal.

Another dated point of reference is the Day of Sport and Health on 16 October 2021. As part of this event, a multifunctional outdoor sports area covering 100 m² was ceremonially handed over in Veľké Kosihy. The “Jungle street workout” sports park included, among other things, an inclined bench, vertical and horizontal ladders, a low horizontal bar, low parallel bars, inclined parallel bars and a two-part high horizontal bar. For the characterisation of the village, this sports area complements the natural and cultural themes with a documented recreational and exercise facility.
