Pribeta – Churches, Nature and the Dr. Ernő Mátyás Educational Trail

Pribeta combines historic religious buildings, an informative ethnographic collection and protected nature. Self-guided through history, culture and nature

The Dr. Ernő Mátyás Educational Trail is a self-guided, circular route in Pribeta that can be walked year-round. It starts at the primary school in Pribeta and is 11 km long. The elevation gain is 65 m, the walking time is approximately four hours, and the route comprises seven stations in total. The trail focuses on history, culture and natural sciences. Its format is therefore clear: you follow a circular route, explore the stations independently and combine several subject areas along the way.

Pribetský háj offers a different perspective on nature; it is a protected area on the southwestern edge of Pribeta. The official designation protects 69 genetically valuable downy oaks (Quercus pubescens). The surroundings of Pribeta also contain nesting tunnels of the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster). Before reaching the built-up area of Pribeta, near the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, there is a natural area with protected pedunculate oaks, autumn crocuses, pheasant's eyes and other protected plants.

Churches with different historical layers

The Holy Trinity Parish Church in Pribeta was rebuilt at its present location in 1733 and is a late Baroque church. The main altarpiece dates from around 1770. The Reformed Church in Pribeta presents a different architectural accent: it was built in 1784–1786 as a towerless Toleration church and did not receive its tower until 1841. Inside are three wooden Protestant galleries and a Neoclassical pulpit with a sounding board. For choosing where to visit, this creates a clear distinction between a late Baroque church and a building whose original form and later addition can still be discerned.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Pribeta was built in 1762 on the site of a hermitage. A modern Calvary group surrounds the chapel. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. At this site, a historic building, the later design of its surroundings and continued religious use come together.

Ethnographic insights and the history of viticulture

The Ethnographic Collection of Pribeta shows how the inhabitants of Pribeta lived in the past, experienced wars and celebrated holidays. The collection is housed in a section of the former Catholic primary school building that was renovated in 2008. Visitors can be guided through the Ethnographic Collection by its founders, Jakab Katalin and Szabó Edit. This distinguishes the experience from the self-guided trail: here, personal interpretation of the local past is the main focus.

Viticulture is also among the municipality's documented themes. Part of the municipal area in Pribeta's southern hill country is suitable for wine-growing; vineyards have been mentioned there since 1720. The combination of landscape, religious buildings, local memory and nature makes Pribeta a place where you can experience different aspects of a stay in a compact form.
