Iža: Roman Heritage and Salt Habitat

Iža combines Roman military history, protected salt habitats, and striking architectural monuments within a small area. For a trip to Slovakia, the town is particularly interesting if you would like to experience historical traces not only in museums, but also at freely accessible remains of fortifications, reconstructed watchtowers, and churches. In addition, a signposted cycling route leads through Iža and connects the town with Komárno and Patince.

Kelemantia Fort and the Danube Limes

The Roman military camp, the fort in Iža, is one of the two national cultural monuments that make up the Slovak section of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Danube Limes. It was established as a bridgehead of the legionary camp of Brigetio. At the same time, the fort is considered the only permanently inhabited military fortress identified so far on the left bank of the Danube in the northern Pannonian Limes. This classification makes the site an unusual setting for Roman military history.

Several temporary Roman camps from the time of the Marcomannic Wars are also located near the fort. They are considered exceptional evidence of Roman military history. The stone remains of the fortifications at Kelemantia are freely accessible to the public.

Watchtowers and the Kelemantia Museum

Two watchtowers built according to Roman models stand at the eastern and western edges of Iža along the main road. Both towers can be climbed and thus serve, in a sense, as small observation towers. They complement the stone remains of Kelemantia with clearly visible structures at different points throughout the town.

The Kelemantia Roman and Ethnographic Museum has 16 craft workshops where Roman and traditional crafts are presented. During the year, the available workshops can only be attended as part of various events. The visiting arrangements also distinguish between regular and pre-booked appointments: visits are scheduled on Tuesdays and Fridays from 13:00 to 15:00; on Wednesdays and Thursdays, pre-booked visits for groups and individuals are listed from 09:00 to 16:00. Outside these regular hours, the museum also welcomes visitors by prior appointment.

Churches and Historical Architectural Monuments

The Roman Catholic church in Iža was built in the 16th century and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It is designated as a national cultural monument. Inside, the main altar and the pulpit date from the 1770s; both are designed in the Rococo style. Thus, Iža is home not only to Roman frontier fortifications, but also to a church building with a clearly identifiable history of its furnishings.

The Reformed church was built in 1871. A second memorial plaque is dedicated to the victims of the Second World War. A small, functional arch bridge is also located on the banks of the Danube and is locally known as the “Turkish bridge.” Its origin in the Ottoman period is presumed. This cautious historical classification is part of the character of the structure and should not be equated with a confirmed dating.

Salt Habitat and Cycling Route

With Bokrošské slanisko, Iža also has a site of particular natural interest. The area is protected as a nature reserve and has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2004. It includes the priority European habitat type 1340*, inland salt meadows and salt marshes. The technical term describes a specific habitat and refers to the protected character of the area, not to a general landscape designation.

A signposted and developed cycling route is available for getting around by bicycle. It leads from Komárno via Iža to Patince and back to Komárno. The fort, churches, museum, and nature reserve each offer their own thematic focus.
