Žemberovce between the Nature Trail and Cultural Heritage

Žemberovce lies at the transition between the northern part of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hills and the Štiavnické vrchy Mountains. As a result, the village combines a distinctive landscape with evidence of architectural and settlement history.

Horšianska dolina Nature Trail: Nature with clear conditions

The Horšianska dolina Nature Trail is 5.8 kilometres long and can be completed in approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. The trail is classified as a moderately difficult route. The northern section runs through the Horšianska dolina National Nature Reserve. For this section, it is recommended to walk from Žemberovce to Horša. A viewpoint along the trail offers a unique view of a meander of the Sikenica. Andesite pyroclastics, or volcanic rock deposits, can also be seen there.

The route has one specific feature: the Sikenica must be crossed at a signposted ford along the trail. When water levels are high, during snowmelt or after heavy rainfall, passage through the valley is not permitted. The nature trail is therefore a destination where the prevailing conditions play an important role, not only because of its landscape but also because of this clear restriction. The Natura 2000 site SKUEV0870 also includes the cadastral area of Dolné Žemberovce.

Chateau, Churches and Places of Remembrance

Žemberovce Chateau is a Neoclassical manor house with a Neo-Romanesque redesign. It was renovated in 1812 and expanded with an extension at the end of the 19th century. The local culture of remembrance also includes the birthplace of Major Daniel Gonda, a monument registered as a memorial house with a commemorative plaque. The grave of Major Daniel Gonda, with its gravestone, is listed as protected cultural heritage in Žemberovce.

The religious buildings also give the village a distinctive character. The Roman Catholic Church of Kostol Mena Panny Márie is a Baroque church built in 1754. The Evangelical church in Žemberovce was built in 1886 in the traditional Neoclassical style of Josephinian churches. It is a single-nave building with a polygonal altar apse, sacristy and projecting tower.

Traditions and Historical Village Culture

Annual traditions in Žemberovce include a Fašiangy procession. Traditional activities included winegrowing, weaving, basketry and the production of wooden goods. One specific historical example is the Fašiangy celebration on 5 March 2011: the programme included a home slaughter held in front of the health centre and in the premises of the seniors' club, as well as the traditional burial of the double bass at the cultural centre. Getting to Žemberovce

There are direct bus connections between Levice and Žemberovce. This documents a specific connection for travelling between the regional centre of Levice and the village. Together with the nature trail, nature reserve and cultural monuments, this creates a destination where the landscape experience and local history offer different focal points.
