Horné Semerovce lies on the southeastern edge of the Ipeľská pahorkatina, in the Široká dolina valley of the Štiavnica. Buildings from different periods and a section of the Šahanská trasa give the town two distinct travel themes: cultural history and cycling. When choosing a destination, it is worth considering them separately: the architecture tells a story of building styles and periods, while the cycling route, with its total length and road surfaces, describes a specific touring option.

Landscape and protected area

The Hornosemerovský park is a protected landscape area (CHA) in Horné Semerovce. It covers 118,791 m², and 1984 is listed as the year it was designated as protected. Together with the town’s location in the valley and on the edge of the Ipeľská pahorkatina, the protected area offers another point of reference for understanding the landscape character of the town.

Church, crypt, and building history

The Church of All Saints (Kostol Všetkých svätých) is originally Gothic and was built on older foundations. The south portal features a runic inscription on the architrave and traces of a fresco in the ogee-shaped tympanum. The combination of written and pictorial traces with the building’s older history gives architecture enthusiasts specific details to describe the church. It is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund under number 1603/0.

The crypt of the Stainlein-Saalenstein family is also part of the town’s history. It has a T-shaped floor plan and contains burial niches for 31 members of noble families. The floor plan and the number of burial niches convey different aspects of its design.

The Wilczekovský manor house (Wilczekovský kaštieľ) was built in 1763 in the Baroque style. Its U-shaped floor plan faces a park. These details allow for a brief comparison with the originally Gothic church: the manor house is characterized by its Baroque style and year of construction, while the church is distinguished by its Gothic origins and older foundations.

The masonry bell tower dates from the early 18th century. Its solid structure has a square floor plan and pentagonal sound openings. The tower is in good condition and continues to serve its purpose. Along with its age and form, it therefore adds an ongoing function to the town’s architectural history.

Cycling the Šahanská trasa

A description published in 2021 calls the Šahanská trasa a 45-kilometer cycling route and lists the Horné Semerovce–Hrubá Hora section. It mentions paved and unpaved field roads and identifies the route as suitable for cross bikes. The total length, named section, and type of bicycle can thus all be taken into account when planning a tour. As surface conditions can change, check current route conditions before setting out.

The difference between the main attractions can help guide your travel decision: the buildings reveal different construction periods and architectural styles, while the cycling route is defined by its length, surfaces, and specified bicycle type. If you are looking for hotels for your trip to Slovakia, you can first consider whether you are interested in Horné Semerovce primarily for its cultural history or as a starting point for cycling.
