Nový Tekov combines the Hron landscape with a remarkable local history. The municipality lies on the right-bank floodplain of the Hron River. Anyone looking for cultural traces, horse-riding traditions and peaceful nature experiences while travelling will find a range of options here: historic churches, archaeological evidence, a memorial room and activities involving horse riding and carriage rides.

Location on the Hron and Getting Your Bearings

The river crossing has changed over time. A former ferry connected Nový Tekov with Starý Tekov; it was replaced by a modern single-lane bridge. This history is part of getting your bearings along the Hron and also shows how closely the village is connected to the river.

Churches, Memorial Room and Archaeological Traces

Among the notable buildings is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Charles, a Baroque-Classical church dating from 1811. The Reformed Church also offers an insight into the local history. It was built in the Classical style in 1791 and restored after a fire in 1850. Inside are a red-marble communion table from 1821 and a Classical red-marble pulpit from 1829. For visitors interested in culture, these represent several historical layers that can be read in different buildings and details of their furnishings.

The Nový Tekov memorial room is located in the premises of the former one-class school. It was opened to mark the 700th anniversary of the municipality’s first written mention. It can be visited on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; organized groups can arrange an appointment in advance. The village cemetery is also noteworthy for its old gravestones.

Earlier settlement also left its traces. Among the oldest archaeological finds in Nový Tekov is a Roman-Barbarian settlement from the 8th to 9th century. A Slavic inhumation burial from the 9th century was also discovered. In the Marušová district, several original 19th-century houses with outbuildings have been preserved. These features make the village especially interesting for travellers who want to discover not only visible buildings but also the deeper historical layers of a Slovak municipality.

Horses, Rides and the Hron Landscape

The Nový Tekov stud farm was founded in 1861 to breed draft and sport horses. The historic stud farm offered horseback rides, carriage rides and rides in a sulky. Today, the activities offered by Ranč u Bobiho provide an opportunity to combine a stay with horses and the Hron landscape: carriage or wagon rides follow the Hron and return through Nový Tekov to the ranch grounds. Riding lessons for beginners and slightly advanced riders are also offered year-round.

Horseback rides along the Hron offer an opportunity to discover the local flora and fauna. This means that different ways of experiencing the area can be combined: you can focus on churches and history during a village tour, plan a visit to the memorial room during its regular opening hours, or enhance your stay with a ride or riding lesson. Your choice of accommodation can likewise be based on whether culture, horse-related experiences or the river landscape is your main priority.
