Pastovce – Ipeľ, Church and Culture

Pastovce combines a distinctive landscape of rivers and streams with a multifaceted cultural history. The village lies in the Ipeľská pahorkatina on the wet right-bank floodplain of the Ipeľ. On one side, the river encloses the village centre in a semicircular curve, while on the other side the Čárad stream borders the centre. This setting gives Pastovce a clearly recognisable landscape character and makes the village interesting for travellers who want to combine nature observation, history and peaceful exploration.

Between the Ipeľ, Čárad and Farkas Valley

The watercourses are not merely geographical names but shape the structure of the village. The Ipeľ runs alongside the centre on one side, while the Čárad borders it on the other. This floodplain landscape is complemented by Farkas Valley, a gorge approximately 300 m long and 30 m deep. Prehistoric fossils can be found there. Unlike the damp river lowland, this area is characterised by a distinctly different terrain feature. Travellers who want to experience different types of landscape when choosing a destination will therefore find both watercourses and a striking gorge in Pastovce.

History from the Lengyel Culture to the Present

Pastovce was first mentioned in writing in 1135 under the name Paztuh. Archaeological traces date back even further: finds provide evidence of a Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture. The village’s history is also reflected in several specific memorials and buildings. Pastovce is home to a memorial house dedicated to Zsigmond Zalabai, who was born in Pastovce and is regarded as an important writer and literary historian.

The Reformed Church of Pastovce was originally built in the 12th century as a Romanesque manorial gallery church. In the 15th century, it was given a Gothic polygonal presbytery. In front of the church, the municipal administration had a carved memorial pillar erected on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the battles of 1848–1849. Different historical layers therefore stand side by side in one place: the medieval history of the building, the remembrance of the battles of 1848–1849 and the commemoration of an important literary figure.

Cycling Route, Via Slovakia Stage and Rail Connection

For active exploration, the Ipeľská cyklomagistrála 009 is classified as an easy recreational mountain biking route. Another type of route is Via Slovakia Stage 02 from Komárno to Šahy. It runs via Malé Kosihy, Pastovce, Bielovce and Ipeľský Sokolec. On the section passing through Pastovce, between Malé Kosihy and Ipeľský Sokolec, the route runs mainly along the main road, with short sections on farm tracks. This precise distinction helps you avoid categorising the stage generally as a continuous unpaved route through natural surroundings.

Pastovce is a stop on train route 153 between Šahy and Čata. In addition, Pastovce has a pond that is a popular recreational spot for anglers. Thus, alongside historical sights and routes, the village landscape also includes a body of water and a leisure activity explicitly associated with fishing.
