Pohronský Ruskov – Archaeology, the Hron and Military History

Pohronský Ruskov combines a multilayered cultural history with the landscape of the Hron. The village lies in the eastern part of the Danubian Lowland on a low river terrace on the right bank of the river. The Hron flows through the cadastral area for a length of 3 km; along its banks, remnants of willow-poplar floodplain forests have been preserved. Archaeological, ecclesiastical and industrial evidence therefore forms a clear connection with the surrounding landscape here.

Archaeology from the Neolithic to the La Tène period

Pohronský Ruskov is an important archaeological site. Settlement finds from the Neolithic are associated with the Linear Pottery, Slovak Painted and Lengyel cultures. Further finds date from the Hallstatt and La Tène periods; a burial ground has also been documented. The archaeological evidence extends into the Slavic period and also includes settlement remains from the Roman-Barbarian cultural sphere. Those interested in the long development of human settlements will therefore find not just a single historical period here, but a succession of different eras in one place.

Church and commemorative culture

A prominent part of the village’s history is today’s Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. It was built from 1953 to 1962 after the original church was destroyed by retreating German troops. The tower was added in 2003. As a filial church, the building belongs to the Hronovce parish. The memory of the former church has also been preserved: remains of the original church bell form part of the memorial to the victims of the Second World War.

Sugar factory and historic industrial architecture

The industrial past complements the archaeological and ecclesiastical heritage. The Pohronský Ruskov sugar factory was founded in 1893 and was expanded to include, among other things, a large mill. A narrow-gauge railway connected the sugar factory complex with the surrounding manor farms and farmsteads. The former sugar factory buildings bear witness to industrial architecture from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. They thus point to a historic production landscape that was organised beyond the factory complex itself.

Experience military history at the museum

The Military Historical Museum Pohronský Ruskov offers an illustrative introduction to the more recent past. Visitors can see various dioramas, authentic photographs, weapons and military equipment there. The collection includes a functioning Soviet T34/85 tank; it also comprises around 300 weapons. The museum can be visited daily by prior telephone arrangement. Every August, it organises the South Wind military show in memory of the soldiers who fell in the military conflicts on the banks of the Hron.

Pohronský Ruskov is therefore particularly well suited to choosing between several forms of cultural experience: archaeological finds reveal the long history of settlement, the church and war memorial make local remembrance visible, while the sugar factory and narrow-gauge railway document industrial development. The Hron terrace and the preserved floodplain forest remnants also give this historical profile a distinctly scenic setting.
