Hronské Kľačany: Churches, Mill and Cycling Region

Hronské Kľačany combines a clearly recognizable local history with religious buildings, a historic drainage canal and regional cultural traditions. This creates a place where various facets can be explored side by side when planning your trip: the development of the chapel and church, the Marian Chapel on Krížny vrch, the mill on the Perec, as well as markets, crafts and cycling. A railway stop in the village adds a specific transport point to this overview.

Chapels and Churches as Historical Landmarks

The first chapel in Hronské Kľačany was built in 1764 in what is now the cemetery. In its place, the original old church was built in 1784 and dedicated to Saints Philip and James. It had neither a tower nor bells. The present bell tower in the local cemetery was ceremonially unveiled on July 7, 2013; the bell inside it is also dedicated to Saints Philip and James.

Another important site is the Marian Chapel on Krížny vrch. It was built in 1913–1914 on the initiative of the chaplain Imrich Jonáš by local winegrowers and residents of Podlužany and Hronské Kľačany using their own funds. Inside are a small stone altar and a Baroque-style statue of the Mother of God holding the dead Jesus, taken down from the cross, in her arms. The Church of the Divine Heart of Jesus in Hronské Kľačany was built in 1930–1932 as a single-nave church with a presbytery and a three-storey tower on the right side of the façade. It is in good condition and serves its religious purpose.

Perec, the Mill and Community Spaces

The Perec drainage canal, locally called Kompa, was built in the immediate vicinity of Hronské Kľačany in 1634. An old mill was restored along the canal in 1634. Both details are historical reference points for the village; the name Perec, or Kompa, helps place the described landscape and cultural area precisely. There is also a public fire pit at the water installation behind the school grounds.

Local events also reveal different aspects of life in the village. The Hodový jarmok takes place annually in Hronské Kľačany in June, including in the area around the mill. Farmers’ markets are scheduled to take place at the cultural center in March. The marketplaces of Hronské Kľačany are also intended to host traditional craft demonstrations, as well as catering, restaurant services, fast-food outlets and refreshments. These references represent different types of events and should not be combined into a single event.

Cycling Region and Cultural Traces

Together with Levice and Starý Tekov, Hronské Kľačany is a founding member of the Tekovsko-hontiansky cykloregión. One of the aims of this association is to develop a cycling route connecting all participating municipalities. For travel planning, this documents a regional perspective, but it does not mean that a fully developed or currently rideable route can be assumed.

The folklore group Hron is also part of the area’s cultural history. It performed in Krakovany and Piešťany in 1975, in Myjava in 1976, and at Fašiangy. A monument in Hronské Kľačany was created by the academic sculptor Stanislav Mikuš and ceremonially unveiled on July 7, 2002. Together with the churches, chapel and mill, this creates a local profile that combines historic buildings, regional customs and communal places of remembrance.
