Slatina lies at the foot of the western foothills of the Krupinská planina in the Štiavnica Valley. This places the town within two landscape features: the valley and the edge of the uplands. Mineral water is another theme, both geological and historical. If you are considering Slatina as a possible place to stay on your trip to Slovakia, the landscape, local history and cycling routes offer some concrete points of reference.

Landscape and Mineral Water

The area where Slatina-type mineral water emerges includes travertine hills in Slatina. This connects the mineral water to the town through a named landform. A mineral water spring is located 500 m south of Slatina, at a bottling plant. Access at the bottling plant is rated as good; if you would like to visit the spring, check in advance whether it is currently open to the public.

History and Local Life

The oldest surviving written mention of Slatina dates from 1245; the document refers to the settlement as “villa Zalatna”. In 1802, Dr. Pavol Kitaibel studied the physical, chemical and medicinal properties of the mineral water and recorded a stable temperature of 14.4 °C. This measurement belongs to his study at the time. The Hody cultural event takes place every year in May. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the current dates before travelling.

Cycling Routes with Different Profiles

Cyclists have two different points of reference. The Šahanská trasa runs from Dudince through vineyards to Slatina and continues to Šahy. Slatina is therefore on the described route between the two towns; the vineyard section is part of this route. The Hrušovský okruh 2594 is a blue-marked, moderately difficult circular cycling route with a total length of 75 km. It passes through Sečianky, Kleňany and Ipeľské Úľany to a mineral water spring in Slatina.

The routes can be compared by their different features: the Šahanská trasa is defined by the Dudince–Slatina–Šahy sequence and the route through vineyards. For the Hrušovský okruh, its circular format, blue markings, moderate difficulty and total length are all part of its profile. If you are looking for a named vineyard connection or a loop described by length and difficulty, these details offer two different ways to experience Slatina by bike.

Getting There and Getting Around

Slatina lies on road I/75, which directly connects the town with Veľký Krtíš, 44 km away, and Lučenec, 88 km away. European route E77 runs about 2 km west of Slatina and connects the surrounding area with a Hungarian border crossing 14 km away. For getting your bearings, there are direct connections to the two towns mentioned, as well as E77 to the west in the direction of the border crossing.
