Čata – Ľudový dom, local history and the Hron
Čata combines a clearly identifiable river landscape with a vibrant local history. Between the Ľudový dom, archaeological traces and the Hron, a destination emerges whose distinctive features lie less in major sights than in the preserved evidence of everyday life. If you are looking for accommodation in Čata, you will find various starting points here for culture, landscape and regional mobility.
Location between the Danubian Lowland and the Hron
Čata lies at an elevation of 130 m in the eastern part of the Danubian Lowland and the southern part of the Ipeľ Hills. The village is situated on the low-lying right-bank floodplain and the terraces of the Hron. The river crosses the cadastral area of Čata from Pohronský Ruskov in a north-to-south direction. This precise location describes the landscape setting of the village without reducing it to a single excursion destination.
The Ľudový dom as a gateway to local history
Local history is particularly vividly presented in the Ľudový dom. The building dates from 1896, preserves elements of folk architecture and still has an iron fence made in 1930. Inside are original furnishings from a traditional Čata living room, the so-called “clean room”. The rear room, arranged as a museum, contains a loom that is still functional today, as well as accessories such as a spinning wheel and spindle.
Craft traditions also remain tangible there: the Ľudový dom displays works made from corn leaves by the local craftswoman Bajkai Mária. The site is intended to convey tangible evidence of the past to young people and awaken their interest in how their ancestors lived. For your travel planning, this means a specific cultural focus that can be experienced not only through dates, but through rooms, objects and handicrafts.
Archaeology, music and religious heritage
The history of Čata extends significantly further back than the preserved residential building. Archaeological finds document settlements from the Neolithic through the Copper Age, the Hallstatt period, the Early Bronze Age, the La Tène period and the Roman-Barbarian period to the Slavic period after the Great Moravian Empire. The historical local culture also included viticulture, basket weaving and weaving.
The village’s cultural present is enriched by the Rozmaring choir. It continues to operate with great commitment to this day; in recent years, its members have organised numerous cultural events and performed at cultural events. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist dates from 1958 and continues to be used for religious services. Thus, archaeological history, traditional crafts, communal singing and religious life exist side by side in Čata.
The Hron and regional connections
Those who view the Hron as more than just a landscape feature will find a separate focus in Hron Fishing District section No. 2. It extends from the lower cadastral boundary of the municipality of Čata to the MVE Šárovce weir. Fishing is permitted there year-round, subject to compliance with the applicable closed seasons. This regulation forms part of the specific conditions governing this section and should be taken into account when making your own plans.
Regional integration is also relevant when travelling to Čata and choosing accommodation there: a Class I road runs through the village and provides connections to the surrounding area as well as to the nearest employment centres, Levice and Štúrovo. Both bus and rail connections are used in Čata.
