Tupá – Cultural Heritage in the Ipeľ Hills

Tupá combines a multilayered settlement history with churches, bridges and a landscape between the Ipeľ Hills and the Ipeľ floodplain. The Štiavnica stream flows through the municipality. Archaeological Traces and Local History

The history of Tupá goes back a long way. Settlement phases from the Neolithic, Copper Age and Early Bronze Age have been archaeologically documented within the municipality. In addition, there is a Germanic settlement dating from the 2nd to 3rd century and an Old Slavic settlement from the 8th to 10th century. This sequence shows that the locality is shaped not only by more recent structures, but also looks back on several clearly identified settlement phases.

Churches and Museum

One focal point is the district of Chorvatice. The All Saints' Church is a single-nave Classicist building with a rectangular-ended presbytery and an attached tower dating from 1795. There is a crypt beneath the church. The cultural monuments located there include an altar, an altarpiece, a pulpit and statues. A state-protected lime tree, planted in 1898, also stands beside the church. Thus, architectural history, sacred furnishings and a single precisely dated natural monument are concentrated at this site.

The Folk Museum is located in Tupá's cultural centre. It is open to visitors during the office hours of the municipal office. This provides a specific place to visit with clearly stated access hours, without allowing any additional opening information to be inferred.

The district of Tupá is also home to the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, which was blessed in 2023. A mosaic is documented in this church for 2024. These two details refer to different points in time and describe the more recent history of the locality.

Landscape, Bridge and Walking Connections

The location in the Ipeľ Hills and the Ipeľ floodplain forms the municipality's landscape setting. The Štiavnica stream flows through the municipality and thus provides another specifically named local reference. An iron bridge built in 1900 crosses the Štiavnica in Tupá. It is currently used by pedestrians. In addition, the steel bridge was brought to Tupá in 1900 over the newly constructed railway line. The bridge's history thus connects a structure from 1900 with the locality's transport development, without implying any specific current transport connection.
