Želiezovce lies in the Danubian Lowland on the right bank of the Hron. Riparian forests are characteristic of the area around the river; at the same time, the town combines protected parks with a remarkable cultural history. Želiezovský Park is a protected historic park area in Želiezovce. The Čereš pheasantry is also located in Želiezovce and covers 2,136 hectares. This means that the town is defined not only by individual buildings, but also by larger landscapes.

One particularly striking green space is F. Schubert Park. The protected area lies in the centre of Želiezovce and covers 13 hectares. It is home to a protected two-row bald cypress, botanically known as Taxodium distichum, which is 25 metres tall and estimated to be 200 years old. The park is open to the public at all times. F. Schubert Park also hosts a national folk art festival every year.

Church, Castle and Town Museum

The originally Gothic Church of St James stands in the centre of Želiezovce. It preserves Gothic wall paintings dating from around 1430. One unusual detail is the altar base, which is made from a Roman sarcophagus dating from the 2nd century. The Esterházy Castle in Želiezovce was originally Baroque and was later remodelled in the Neoclassical style.

The town museum and the Franz Schubert memorial room are located in Sovom zámočku in Želiezovce. The archaeological exhibition at the town museum covers the Želiezovská culture as well as periods ranging from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period to the Migration Period. A room on the upper floor is dedicated to the life and work of Franz Schubert and furnished with period furniture. In this way, the cultural story extends from early settlement traces to music history.

The town's own history also has an early starting point. The first written mention of Želiezovce dates from 1274. In this record, the town appears as Selyz, a settlement with a church, a mill and a stone bridge.

A Place with Its Own Culinary and Cultural Character

Želiezovce is also connected with the story of Franz Sacher. Count Ján Karol Esterházy brought Franz Sacher to Želiezovce as his personal chef; he is said to have invented the world-famous Sacher-Torte there. This tradition adds a culinary connection to the town's architectural and museum history without reducing its character to a single theme.

The National Folk Art Festival was founded in 1970 and added to the list of CIOFF World Festivals in 2018.

The Hron Landscape and Different Travel Ideas

The landscape can also be experienced along the Hron. On the Hron, you can complete the section from Jur nad Hronom to Želiezovce, potentially continuing as far as the Danube. This creates a clear contrast for your travel planning between historic interiors, protected park areas and a stretch of river. Depending on your focus, the Church of St James, the town museum, the parkland or the Hron route may take centre stage.
