Tekovský Hrádok – Traces of a Castle and Paths along the Hron

History between Castle Traces and Church

Tekovský Hrádok combines a location on the Hron with an unusually dense sequence of historical traces. In the western part of the present-day cemetery are the remains of the Zemný hrad earthwork castle. The history of the settlement before this period is also archaeologically documented: a Neolithic settlement of the Linear Pottery and Lengyel cultures has been identified in Tekovský Hrádok. Later finds include Slavic ramparts from the 9th and 10th centuries.

Tekovský Hrádok is also associated with Várad, a vanished castle. The former settlement of Horný Várad has been documented under the name Warad since 1232. The place can therefore be understood not only through a single historic structure, but through several traces from different periods – from the Neolithic settlement and Slavic ramparts to the medieval references.

A visible part of the townscape is the Reformed, also known as Calvinist, church. It was originally built as a Toleration Church in 1780 and completely rebuilt in 1889. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Floodplain Landscape along the Hron and Routes for Active Days

Tekovský Hrádok lies on the right-bank floodplain of the Hron in the northeastern part of the Danube Lowland.

One specific cycling option is the MERIDIEM 2122 route. It is 28.2 km long, classified as a moderately difficult SPORT-MTB route, and runs over asphalt, paved paths, as well as field and forest tracks. For choosing your tour, the surface is therefore especially important: the route combines several types of paths and is not described as an exclusively asphalt ride.

The cycling route described for the Hronský Triatlon also begins at Tekovský Hrádok. It follows a field track and a grassy embankment along the Hron in the direction of Turá. A 5 km paddling route is specified there for the waterway. It runs on moderately flowing water and ends on the right bank at Tekovský Hrádok. The cycling and paddling routes therefore have different focuses, but both remain closely connected to the river landscape.

Another planned connection is the blue regional cycling route MERIDIEM No. 2122. It is intended to connect Trávnica with Tekovský Hrádok and end there at the junction with the existing yellow route 8103 “Levice–Bardoňovo”. Since this is a planned route, it should be distinguished as a separate reference from the 28.2-kilometre MERIDIEM route already described.

Orientation for Choosing a Starting Point

Two railway connections are documented for planning your journey. Railway line 152 between Štúrovo and Levice runs south of the built-up area of Tekovský Hrádok. There is also a railway stop in the cadastral area of Dolný Tekovský Hrádok.

When you choose accommodation in Tekovský Hrádok, you are therefore staying in a place where cultural history and river-related routes can be clearly distinguished: the cemetery and castle traces form part of the historic view of the settlement, the church offers a preserved and still-used testimony, while cycling and paddling routes explore the Hron landscape from a more active perspective.
