Hrkovce between the Ipeľ riverbank and vineyards

Hrkovce lies on the northern bank of the Ipeľ River and combines a clearly recognizable river landscape with a historic wine-growing town. The municipality is located in the Ipeľská pahorkatina at an altitude of 125 to 205 meters above sea level. The boundaries of the town are also precisely defined by the landscape: the Krupinka stream forms the eastern boundary, while the Štiavnička stream forms the western one. The valley near Hrkovce is less than 3 kilometers wide between two mountain ranges. Those who want to get to know a small-scale section of the Slovak landscape will therefore find here not just a place name, but a clearly defined geographical setting.

Historic town with sacral buildings

The first written mention of Hrkovce dates back to 1156. An important testimony to the town's later history is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It was built in 1770 and is classified as Baroque-Classical in style. The church survived the fire of July 29, 1808, in which Hrkovce almost completely burned down. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. This historical picture is complemented by the Chapel of the Most Holy Redeemer, built in 1900.

Wine-growing and living summer traditions

Wine-growing is one of the specifically documented aspects of Hrkovce. The agricultural cooperative cultivates 25 hectares of vineyards. There are wine cellars in the vineyards; a statue of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winemakers, holding a grape, also stands there. These elements make the connection between agriculture, religious traditions and local culture visible without reducing the town to a single theme.

The summer festivities, held annually since 1999, play a special role in the course of the year. They include a football tournament between single and married people on the local football pitch. Baňa, a natural amphitheater in the vineyards of Hrkovce, is also used for community entertainment during the summer festivities. The festivities therefore represent not just a date, but several specific locations: the football pitch, the vineyards and the natural amphitheater.

Park, water management and orientation

At the entrance to Hrkovce there is a recreational park with various climbing frames for children and benches for resting. This provides a clearly designated area for leisure and relaxation at the entrance to the town. In addition, water management activities are carried out on a limited scale, focusing on sport fishing, water protection and environmental protection. This factual description concerns the way the waters are managed, but says nothing about additional leisure activities or specific fishing opportunities.

Rail and bus connections

For arriving in Hrkovce, there is a railway stop on the Šahy–Zvolen railway line. The line passing through the town was built in 1899. There is also a bus stop with connections in the directions of Šahy–Levice–Nitra–Bratislava and Šahy–Dudince–Zvolen–Banská Bystrica.
