Šarovce: Experience Archaeology, the Hron and Culture

On the right bank of the Hron

Šarovce lies on the right bank of the Hron and combines a riverside setting with archaeological traces from several periods. If you would like to connect cultural history with a specific landscape during your trip through Slovakia, you will find an unusually wide range of different points of interest here. There is evidence of intensive settlement by the Baden culture around 3000 BC; these finds include numerous ceramic fragments. The archaeological record also includes two bronze daggers found in cultural pits.

The La Tène period is also documented in Šarovce. From 450 BC until the beginning of the Common Era, a spacious Celtic farmstead stood in the area of the present-day village. The archaeological evidence thus ranges from the Baden culture to an era in which Celtic settlement forms can be traced.

Churches, Museum and Visible History

In Veľké Šarovce stands the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Guardian Angels. The Neoclassical building was erected on the site of an older Early Gothic church dating from the 13th century. In Malé Šarovce, the Reformed church was built in 1780 as a toleration church without a tower, enlarged in 1832 and given its tower in 1899.

The Dedinské múzeum Šarovce presents archaeological, ethnographic and current exhibitions of the municipality. Visits can be arranged with Alžbeta Boháčová at 036/7792056. This makes it possible to plan the museum visit specifically as a separate cultural stop, without viewing the archaeological themes only in the village streetscape or through individual buildings.

Another historical landmark is the bust of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It was unveiled in Šarovce on 19 November 2014. The history of the original Chapel of Saint Donáth has also been preserved: it had stood for a long time on the road leading out towards Želiezovce, on the right-hand side of the road, and was demolished. Afterwards, a site for a chapel was selected on the right-hand side of the road, near the granary in the direction of Želiezovce.

Cultural Event and Activities by the Water

Since 2005, Csemadok has organised the cultural event “Turičné stretnutie” every year in May. This recurring event complements the permanently visible historical monuments with a cultural event tied to a fixed time of year.

The VN Šarovce fishing grounds cover a 19.8-hectare body of water near Šarovce. They extend from the MVE Šarovce to the Tekovské Lužany–Demandice road bridge. An important restriction should be noted when choosing an activity: fishing is prohibited year-round at the functional structures of the MVE Šarovce facility. The Pohronská cyklomagistrála is suitable for mountain bikes and e-bikes, adding a cycling option to the water-related information.

Getting There and Further Orientation

Šarovce is connected to the national transport system via road I/76 from Štúrovo through Kalná nad Hronom (Levice) to Hronský Beňadik. In the immediate vicinity of the municipality, this road intersects with I/75 from Nové Zámky to Veľký Krtíš.
