Sklené – Cultural History and Marked Trails

Sklené at the eastern foot of the Žiar Mountains

Sklené lies at the southern tip of Turčianska záhradka, at the eastern foot of the Žiar Mountains. The municipality extends between 511 and 892 metres above sea level. This makes it a place where landscape, local history, and marked trails can be experienced within a compact thematic area.

A special memorial site commemorates the Sklené massacre: a memorial was unveiled here in 1994. The church also shapes the village’s historical character. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Renaissance building dating from 1626–1627 and stands on the foundations of an older Gothic structure. In 1963, it was declared a national cultural monument. Inside is a Renaissance hall.

Renaissance, Glass, and Traces in the Villagescape

There stands a winter lime tree around 400 years old and approximately 20 metres tall, with a trunk circumference of 635 centimetres. The cemetery around the church contains cast-iron crosses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The former judge’s house originally dates back to an early 17th-century Renaissance building and was remodelled after 1912. A chain-like colonisation settlement has also been preserved, giving the village a clearly recognisable settlement structure.

The history of glassmaking leads to another specific site. Remains of the first glass furnaces have been preserved at Biely potok; a glass furnace still stands there today. Glass was produced in Sklené until 25 June 1875. Those interested in regional craft and industrial history will therefore find a second focal point directly connected with the village, alongside the church.

Marked Trails Around Sklené

There are several destinations described in different ways for orientation on foot. The Ráztočno–Sklené pri Handlovej hiking trail is marked blue in the regional hiking trail list and is 9 kilometres long. A blue-marked hiking trail also leads from Sklené to the Sklenianske lúky. A red-marked hiking trail connects the village with Bralová skala, where the well-known Cesta hrdinov SNP runs.

Bralová skala can be reached from Sklené via forest and mountain trails by experienced hikers. You can reach the Útulňa SNP Sklené via trails marked blue at first and then red. The route is 5.3 kilometres long and takes approximately 1.5 hours. The Útulňa lies directly on the red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP trail.

A cycling route is also connected with the village: The Remäta–Sklené route passes the Horský hotel Remata recreation centre and then continues across meadows along the ridge into the municipality of Sklené. The Sklené railway station is also part of the local infrastructure for travel planning. It lies on the single-track, non-electrified Horná Štubňa–Prievidza railway line.
