Dubové: Wetland, Village Culture and Cycling Route

Dubové lies on the northeastern slopes of the Žiar Mountains on the left bank of the Turiec River. The village combines a clearly recognizable rural history with a landscape of wetlands, forest and open areas. Wetland and Forest Landscape

The 750-hectare Mokrade Turca area (Turiec Wetlands), site number 932, also includes the cadastral area of Dubové. The wetland is home to rare, endangered and critically endangered species and forms a migration corridor for waterfowl. It also serves as a spawning and nursery area for native fish and other aquatic animals. This protected landscape provides a clear focus alongside the village character and cultural history.

About half of the municipal area of Dubové is without forest, while the rest is characterized by dense woodland. In summer and autumn, the surrounding area is known for the presence of large quantities of mushrooms. There is also a carbonated mineral spring within the municipality, between the road and the Turiec River. The combination of open areas, dense forest, a waterscape and a spring makes the local surroundings varied, without turning them into a single uniform landscape type.

Cycling and Routes to Dubové

Cycling route 8474 Dubové–Požehy–Štubňa is 6 km long and classified as an easy recreational MTB route. It runs along asphalt and paved roads. The route begins before Dubové and leads through the village, so Dubové appears not only as a destination but also as part of the specific route. For a short cycling tour with a manageable distance, this classification is more helpful than a blanket description as a challenging mountain route.

There is also a described approach on foot from the surrounding area: a forest path leads from the nearby spa town of Turčianske Teplice through Diviacky háj to Dubové. This places the village within a connection between the spa landscape, forest path and village. The available information names the route but gives no walking time or further access requirements.

Village History and Notable Buildings

The first written mention of Dubové dates from 1262, when the village was referred to as Doboa. In the upper part of the village stands a bell tower dating from 1873. The character of the village also includes old masonry houses with raised side entrances, adapted to the slightly uneven terrain. These architectural details make the village’s historical structure visible in individual houses, rather than describing it solely through an early date.

The Dvor roľnícky farmstead in Dubové, house numbers 60 and 170, is a national cultural monument. As a monument, it is listed among the national cultural monuments and is recorded in the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund under number 11973/1-2. Another monument in Dubové commemorates those who fell in the fighting of 1944.

Living Local Culture

The Prameň folklore ensemble has existed in Dubové since 1983 and performs at the local cultural center, in other municipalities and at further events. During the carnival season, members of Prameň move through the village singing and dancing. Dubové also has amateur theater for adults and children. Together with the bell tower, historic houses and listed monuments, this shows the village’s culture both in permanent structures and in community performances.
