Veterná Poruba

Veterná Poruba combines a distinctive high-altitude location with Protestant architectural and cultural history, as well as a signposted Nordic walking circuit. The village lies on the ridge of Mount Štefanka in the central part of the Liptov Basin at an elevation of 820 metres. The peaks of the Western Tatras rise to the north. Veterná Poruba therefore offers a clearly defined setting for travellers who wish to combine the landscape with local history.

Location and circuit with mountain views

One specific way to explore the surroundings is the 10-kilometre circuit from Smrečany to Veterná Poruba and back. The route is suitable for Nordic walking and opens up panoramic views of the Western Tatras, the Low Tatras, and the Choč Mountains. It thus links several landscape areas in a single circuit, without Veterná Poruba appearing merely as a viewpoint.

The route also passes through a noteworthy section from a cultural and historical perspective: at its fifth kilometre, it passes the former settlement of Svätý Štefan. This creates a connection between exercise, mountain panoramas, and a historic site that no longer continues to exist as a settlement.

Protestant prayer house and preserved buildings

The Protestant prayer house is at the centre of the local history. It was built in 1873 on the site of a smaller wooden prayer house dating from 1862. Its furnishings include an organ that the prayer house received from the Protestant church in Jasenová in 1892. Following its restoration, it is still in use today. The same prayer house also houses a wooden statue of an archangel from the original church of Svätý Štefan.

Another historic feature is the bell tower, regarded as the oldest surviving building in Veterná Poruba. It was built in 1853 after the great fire of 1850. The dates show how closely the present appearance of the village is connected with reconstruction and preserved religious buildings.

Amateur theatre with a long tradition

Veterná Poruba has not only an architectural history but also a living cultural heritage. Amateur theatre has a tradition spanning more than one hundred years. The first amateur theatre performance took place in 1918 under the title “Eulália sa chce vydávať”; the play was written by an unknown author. The theatrical tradition continues to the present day. Those interested in regional culture will therefore find here, alongside the prayer house and bell tower, a performing-arts tradition whose beginnings can be dated precisely.
