Východná: Folklore, Museums and River Landscapes

Východná combines a distinctive folk culture with historic buildings, river landscapes and concrete opportunities for short excursions. The village is particularly suitable for travellers who want to understand their stay not only through a single attraction, but through museums, events, landscapes and regional traditions.

Culture and Townscape in Východná

The Stanica Svet Martina Sabaku is a dedicated cultural attraction. It is a permanent exhibition of unusual works by Martin Sabaka in a specially designed hall at Farma Východná. Two further insights into local architectural and everyday history are provided by the Drevenica z Východnej and the východnianska múranica. The Drevenica z Východnej was built around 1910 and now serves as a contemporary museum. The východnianska múranica was built in 1921 and is likewise used today as a contemporary museum. The historic centre of Východná was declared a heritage zone in 1991. It includes wooden and masonry buildings in the oldest part of the village, with their gables facing the main road. Typical small houses were built of wood and have two small windows on the gable façade, a shingle roof and a covered entrance area in front of the house. Another notable building is the Protestant church. Its neo-Gothic façade features three-part pointed-arch windows and decorative buttresses. The neo-Gothic altar contains an older painting of the Crucifixion by Karol Prúnyi. The church was built in 1926–1927 to a design by the architect Michal Milan Harminc. The historic Magna Via road also passed through Východná.

Folklore and Regional Specialities

The Východná Folklore Festival was held for the first time in 1953 and takes place annually on the first weekend in July. The programme includes dance, music, singing and creative handicraft workshops, as well as activities for children. The festival is also incorporated into the programmes of the International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art, or C.I.O.F.F. Anyone visiting Východná at this time will therefore encounter a clearly defined cultural event with several forms of expression rather than a purely musical stage programme. Another recurring event is Ovenálie in the Východná amphitheatre. The sheep-farming festival traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in June. Tastings of sheep cheese, bryndza and meat specialities are offered. There are also demonstrations of sheep cheese and bryndza production. The event thus combines regional food with vivid insights into how it is made.

Rivers and Mountain Landscapes

The Biely Váh flows through the Východná area, while the Čierny Váh runs through the southern part of the area. The northern boundary of the area lies in the High Tatras region. These geographical features give the village a landscape setting extending from rivers to the Tatra region, without reducing Východná itself to a single natural theme.

Short Walks and an MTB Route

The Rozhľadňa Májka observation tower can be reached from the car park next to the main entrance of the Východná festival grounds via a short walk of approximately five minutes. There are wooden sculptures and a small children’s playground around the observation tower. For a bike ride, the MTB route “Horná nádrž Čierny Váh z Východnej” begins in Východná and ends at the Čierny Váh reservoir. It is classified as moderately difficult and is 12.7 km long. Most long-distance buses stop in Východná, and regional buses from Liptovský Mikuláš and Poprad also operate there. Východná railway station is located in the village district of the same name, approximately 3.5 km from the village, and is directly connected by bus.
