Liptovský Hrádok – Castle, Museums and City History
Liptovský Hrádok is home to a medieval castle, historic museum buildings, the Trasou pamätihodností route to 33 places of tourist interest that are characteristic of Liptovský Hrádok, and an orientation panorama board on the Skalnaté bralo Skalka rock massif. There is also an arboretum in the city centre and a painted passageway with 44 graffiti paintings.
Castle, Chateau and the History of Wyvar
The first written reference to Hrad a Kaštieľ Liptovský Hrádok dates from 1341. At that time, the castle was mentioned under the name Wyvar. One historical detail is still visible in the complex today: the former moat has been preserved in the form of a pond. Thus, the building history and the landscape element are directly connected, without the moat having to be mistaken for a present-day structure.
Hrad a Kaštieľ Liptovský Hrádok was opened to the public in August 2010. The described tour includes a walk through the Gothic castle and parts of the interior of the Renaissance chateau with an expert guide. This places two different building phases at the centre: the Gothic castle and the Renaissance chateau built later. For selecting sights to visit, this distinction is more important than simply referring to it as a castle complex.
Historic Paths and Places in the Cityscape
Hrádocké arborétum is located in the middle of Liptovský Hrádok, making it a distinct focal point within the city. History is also made visible in the Maľovaným podchodom. The painted passageway conveys the past history of Liptovský Hrádok, extending into the present day, through 44 graffiti paintings. The Trasou pamätihodností route leads to 33 places of tourist interest that are characteristic of Liptovský Hrádok. It therefore draws attention not only to a single monument but to several components of the town.
The Pamiatková zóna Liptovský Hrádok consists of two separate areas on Hradná and Pod lipami streets. In Pod lipami, the avenue of lime trees is the dominant feature of the street. The Church of Kostol Navštívenia Panny Márie is also part of the historic features. Following a major restoration phase, it retains historic furnishings and wall paintings.
Salt, Sheep Farming and Mining
Národopisné múzeum Liptovský Hrádok is housed in the historic building of the Soľný úrad. Two exhibitions focus on different topics: Historická soľná cesta explains the history of the salt trade and the routes along which this valuable commodity reached Liptovský Hrádok. Expozícia ovčiarstva presents cultural traditions associated with traditional forms of sheep farming. Both topics broaden the perspective from individual buildings to economic and everyday history.
Maša pri Liptovskom Hrádku houses an exhibition about mining and metallurgy in the Liptov region. It is located in the original Klopačka and Vážnica buildings of the Hrádok ironworks from the late 18th century. Klopačka houses a gallery with selected reproductions of old mining woodcuts from Juraj Agricola’s work De re metallica libri XII. Vážnica presents the history of mining and metallurgy in Liptov, complemented by a miner’s uniform, a collection of mine lamps and work tools.
Orientation on the Rock Massif
An orientation panorama board showing the names of the mountain peaks and their elevations is located on the Skalnaté bralo Skalka rock massif. In addition, an easy path leads in about seven minutes to a double cross on the summit.
