Vyšná Boca between Mining History and Mountain Landscapes

Vyšná Boca combines the history of a mining settlement with trails through the landscape of the Low Tatras. The village lies in the protected zone of the Low Tatras National Park and, together with Nižná Boca and Malužiná, forms part of the 16-kilometre-long Bocianska Valley. This combination of a historic villagescape, educational trails and mountain paths makes Vyšná Boca a destination for travellers who want to combine culture and nature in a compact valley setting.

Mining and Traditional Architecture

Vyšná Boca has been mentioned as a royal mining town since 1551. At Banícky dom, a house with original historic furnishings presents the traditional way of life and living conditions of a mining family. The rear room also contains an exhibition on the history of mining in the area around Vyšná Boca. Demonstrations of the traditional hay-transport method known as “Bocké batohy” are planned there for the summer season.

The architecture of the surrounding villages also preserves traces of this past. The traditional houses in Vyšná Boca and Nižná Boca were built in the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Their distinctive floor plan developed from an expansion of the three-part layout. The rural character is also reflected in listed hay barns and stable buildings that have survived from the former form of meadow farming in Vyšná Boca and Nižná Boca.

Another important architectural monument is the Evangelical church in Vyšná Boca. It was built in 1785 as a Neoclassical church of toleration on the site of a sacred building dating from the late 16th century. Inside, the wooden ceiling and the galleries on three sides are particularly notable.

Educational Trails for Hiking and Cycling

The Zlatnica Educational Trail is accessible year-round and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Along its 12 kilometres, 11 stations provide information about the surrounding area. This makes it possible to experience the landscape not only as a route, but also through its explanatory stations.

A more demanding option is the Bacúch–Vyšná Boca Educational Trail. The moderately difficult route is 14 kilometres long, includes 690 metres of elevation gain and takes approximately five and a half hours. Five information panels cover nature conservation, history and mining.

Bocianske sedlo is a trail junction for further hikes. This includes the yellow-marked trail from Vyšná Boca to Králička and onward to Chata generála Milana Rastislava Štefánika below Ďumbier. The mountain shelter at Bocianske sedlo provides protection in rain or thunderstorms and lies in the immediate vicinity of a frequently used ridge trail. The Rovná hoľa hike begins in the mining village of Vyšná Boca below Čertovica.

Further Experiences in the Municipality

The Bačova Roveň ski centre is located in the municipality of Vyšná Boca, with groomed, artificially snow-covered slopes and night skiing. The Kyselka mineral spring emerges from a mine tunnel and produces iron-rich mineral water with a sour taste.
