Závažná Poruba

Závažná Poruba combines mountain landscapes, local history and sporting opportunities within a compact area. Above the village rises Mount Poludnica, at 1,549 m; from there, views open across the Liptovská kotlina basin. Marked hiking trails also lead into Nízke Tatry National Park (NAPANT). The village is therefore suited to you if you want to plan a trip combining nature experiences, cultural and historical sites, and activities in both summer and winter.

Mountain Landscape in the National Park

Outside the built-up area, the cadastral territory of Závažná Poruba covers 1,856 hectares. It lies within Nízke Tatry National Park (NAPANT), where nature protection levels 1 to 5 are designated for the area. The village’s marked hiking trails belong to the national park. One specific route for a shorter hike is the Stopy predkov na Veratíne educational trail: the approximately 4.6-kilometre, easy circular route begins at the car park below Ski Opalisko. With children, the circuit takes approximately two to three hours.

Literature and Architectural History

The house of Milan Rúfus contains a literature museum. It displays the poet’s first manuscripts, portraits, photographs and a selection of his thoughts. The house is also where Milan Rúfus and his sister Oľga grew up. The ECAV church provides another historical landmark; it was built in 1933 in the Neo-Gothic style.

The building of Základná škola Milana Rúfusa, the former Evangelical elementary school, is also part of the village’s architectural heritage. It was built in 1865, extended with another storey in 1911 and expanded in 1967. The associated bell tower is 42 metres high, built in the Neo-Romanesque-Gothic style, and dates from 1911.

Educational Trail, Celts and Knowledge of Nature

The Stopy predkov na Veratíne educational trail leads to Veratín, which is 882 m high. Celtic fortifications stood there more than 2,000 years ago. Five information boards along the route explain the history of these fortifications as well as the local fauna and flora. The circular route thus combines exercise with an accessible introduction to the area’s ancient history and nature.

Another family-oriented attraction is Školská včelnica. It features a children’s educational trail, guided tours with expert explanations, and demonstrations of genuine beekeeping equipment. For both summer and winter, the Areál telesného pohybu Mateja Staroňa (AtpMS) expands the range of activities: its sports facilities, including a children’s playground and other sporting opportunities, are open to the general public in summer and winter.

Winter Sports and Sports Equipment

The Ski Opalisko ski resort lies above Závažná Poruba. It has cross-country and downhill ski runs, as well as drag lifts and a chairlift. Ski Opalisko also offers rental and servicing for ski equipment, snowboards, mountain bikes and other sports equipment. When choosing a location, you can therefore take both winter slopes and equipment for other sporting activities into account.
