Bobrovec – Hiking, Nature and Village Culture

Bobrovec offers several different ways to discover the landscape and culture of northern Slovakia. The focus is on hikes towards the Western Tatras, Jalovecká dolina with its distinctive plant life, a cycling route through the village, and traces of local craft and church history. Families can also enjoy a specific experience in the form of pony riding at Salaš Pastierska.

Jalovecká dolina and the nature around Bobrovec

The valley in which Bobrovec lies was formed by the Jalovec stream. Jalovecká dolina represents an almost complete example of the flora and fauna of Tatra National Park. This means that the focus here is not only on a mountain landscape, but also on a natural area offering an unusually comprehensive representation of the plant and animal life typical of the national park.

A particular botanical detail is the klinček lesklý. This rare plant occurs only in Slovakia and is considered a Western Carpathian paleoendemic. It already existed in the Tertiary period. This temporal connection gives plant observation in Jalovecká dolina a historical dimension that goes beyond an ordinary description of the landscape.

Hiking routes with clearly different profiles

The “Babky z Bobrovca” route is classified as an alpine hike, a ridge hike and an educational trail. The classification thus gives three designations for the same route; its classification as an educational trail points to its function of imparting knowledge about the surrounding area.

The 1,805 m-high Sivý vrch, which belongs to the Western Tatras, can also be reached from Bobrovec. The hike offers views of Liptov and Orava. At the starting point of the hike to Sivý vrch in Bobrovecká Vápenica, there is a free car park with sufficient capacity. The “Babky z Bobrovca” ski touring route also begins there. Thus, the same starting area points to different forms of mountain use, without equating the hike with the ski tour.

Cycling and an experience for children

Anyone wishing to explore Bobrovec by bicycle can follow the cycling route from Trstené through Bobrovec and Jalovec to the Bobrovecká Vápenica junction. The route passes through Bobrovec to this junction, placing the village within a longer route between the stated starting and ending points.

At Salaš Pastierska, children can ride ponies. A visit can be combined with an insight into regional food production: traditional sheep’s-milk specialities are made there and sold in its own koliba. These include fresh and smoked sheep’s cheese, sheep’s bryndza and žinčica.

Church, Column and Local History

There are also concrete traces of the village’s history within Bobrovec itself. The carpenters’ guild left behind the St. Joseph Column. The Church of St. George has a bell from 1527 in its tower. The church also houses two paintings of St. George, including one depicting him on horseback. The St. Joseph Column, the bell and the two paintings are distinct testimonies to the craft and church history of Bobrovec.
