Liptovský Trnovec: Liptovská Mara, Culture and Beer

Liptovský Trnovec combines the shoreline landscape of the Liptovská Mara reservoir with an unusually rich cultural history. In the first half of the 19th century, the village was one of the cultural centres of the Liptov region and an important centre of the national revival. The foundations of amateur theatre were laid here in 1864; the first direct mention of a theatrical performance dates from 1865. This makes it a destination where summer activities on the water and historical traces stand closely side by side.

Water along the shores of Liptovská Mara

The cadastral territory of Liptovský Trnovec extends southwards to the shore of the Liptovská Mara reservoir. Plážové kúpalisko Liptovský Trnovec is located on the shore. Jet skis, motorboats, kayaks and pedal boats are rented there. Loď Mara also offers regular catamaran trips for groups of four to 24 people. The options therefore clearly differ in form: while individual watercraft can be used independently, the catamaran trips regularly take place for groups of four to 24 people.

Plážové kúpalisko also offers ideal conditions for sailing and windsurfing on the reservoir. After the reservoir was built, Liptovský Trnovec developed into a centre of summer recreational tourism. Those who choose the village primarily because of the water will therefore find several documented ways to experience their time at the lake differently, without any particular itinerary having to be inferred from this.

Churches, theatre history and a stone pillory

The villagescape also leads through several historical periods. The present-day Classicist Church of the Holy Spirit was built from 1810 to 1820 on the site of a medieval church dating from the early 14th century. The Evangelical Church of Liptovský Trnovec, by contrast, was built in 1925 on the site of a Toleration Church dating from 1784. It contains a memorial plaque from 1784 and an old altarpiece depicting the Last Supper from the late 18th century. Both pieces were transferred from the former Toleration Church.

Another distinctive historical monument is the stone pillory from the 17th century. Chains with shackles are attached on all four sides. Together with the history of theatre, this creates a concrete picture of the local past: the history of religious buildings, public symbols of justice and amateur theatre are among the different subjects documented in Liptovský Trnovec.

MARAVAR: Local brewery with reservations

MARAVAR, a family brewery in Liptovský Trnovec, is also part of the village’s present-day character. Its regular selection includes five types of beer: pale beer 11°, semi-dark beer 12°, a dark stout, IPA, and wheat beer with coriander and orange peel. MARAVAR is open daily by prior reservation.
