Prosiek: Karst Valley, Hiking Trails and Historical Traces

Prosiek lies below the eastern part of the Chočské vrchy at the exit of the Prosiecka dolina. The village thus combines a clearly defined natural area with short and long trails, as well as an unusually dense succession of historical traces. The Prosiecka dolina and its trails

The Prosiecka dolina is a 3.5 km-long karst valley in the Chočské vrchy and emerges near Prosiek. At the end of the village, near the entrance to the valley, there is a paid car park. It serves as a starting point for hikers and visitors to the valley. The location makes the valley entrance a natural point of orientation for various forms of exploration, without confusing short and long routes with one another. For a shorter route, the blue-marked cycle route no. 2407 runs directly through Prosiek. It is approximately 2.8 km long and follows field and forest paths. A considerably more extensive option is the Prosiek – Veľké Borové – Oblazy – Kvačany circular route. It connects the Prosiecka dolina with the Kvačianska dolina, is approximately 17.6 km long and has almost 700 m of elevation gain. The circular route can be completed in one day and thus clearly differs from the short cycle route through the village. The educational trail through the Prosiecka dolina and the Kvačianska dolina also has its own focus. It comprises 12 stations with information boards on geographical, biological and historical topics. Prosiek and Kvačany serve as starting points for the Prosiecka dolina and the Kvačianska dolina, respectively. This allows the two valleys to be incorporated into your daily itinerary from different directions, while the circular route describes the connection between both landscapes as one continuous trail.

Church, manor house and archaeological traces

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Elizabeth stands in the village. It was built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and was first mentioned in 1397. Its present appearance was created through several alterations: an extension in 1826, a neoclassical façade design in 1880 and the addition of a western tower in 1927. The church is therefore not merely associated with a single historical point in time, but is a building with clearly successive phases of development. Another historical trace is the manor house of Prosiek. It originally dates from the late 16th century and was later remodelled in the Classical style. The Hrádok archaeological site is also located at the entrance to the Prosiecka dolina. It is protected as a national cultural monument and includes fortifications from the Iron Age and the Middle Ages. The history of the valley reaches back even further. Archaeological investigations near a cave and a spring uncovered a settlement from the Eneolithic period and a settlement from the later Roman Imperial period in the Prosiecka dolina. Together with the church, manor house and Hrádok, this creates a picture in which the natural environment and settlement history stand closely side by side.
