Dúbrava is a place where the Low Tatras and mining heritage offer two distinct points of interest for a trip to Slovakia. The mountains cover almost two-thirds of the municipality; at the same time, a memorial room and the local mining history recall ore extraction. A church with medieval and Renaissance features, along with traditional customs, adds to the area’s cultural character.

Low Tatras landscape

The Low Tatras shape Dúbrava on a large scale. Chabenec lies on the main ridge along the municipality’s southern boundary; its summit reaches 1,955 metres above sea level. Dúbrava is part of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site.

The Dúbravka is also part of the landscape: it is the largest body of water flowing through Dúbrava’s cadastral area. This gives the area two distinct natural features—the mountain ridge with Chabenec and the river within the municipality.

Nature trails and walking routes

The Náučný chodník Banícka cesta is an easy 6.3-kilometre nature and walking trail. It starts at Štátne majetky in Dúbrava. Its stated length, difficulty level and starting point can help you fit the route into your day’s plans. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Five information boards stand along a path through the Dúbravská dolina. In addition to the Banícka cesta, whose length is specified, these boards in the Dúbravská dolina are another distinctive feature of the area’s trails.

Mining history and remembrance

Banícka faleska serves as a memorial room, displaying historical artefacts from the period when mining flourished in Dúbrava. The facility opened in 2023.

Predpekelná is also part of the area’s mining history. There, eight miners from Dúbrava extracted antimony ore: they blasted the ore with black powder and carried it to the surface in wooden troughs. These recorded work steps bring the mining process to life—from extraction in the Predpekelná section to transporting the ore.

Deň baníckej obce Dúbrava is held annually; the event on 14 September 2024 offered visitors goulash, food and drink stalls, and craft stalls. The festival brings the mining heritage together with a public event. If you want to plan your trip around attending the festival, check the dates for the relevant year; the event format may vary.

Church and traditional customs

The church Kostol sv. Ondreja apoštola dates from the 13th century. In the 17th century, it was remodelled and fortified in the Renaissance style. Remains of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved inside. The building thus brings together features from different periods: its medieval origins, its later Renaissance design and the surviving Gothic paintings.

Traditional customs also offer insight into local culture. Before Easter, the Muriena was carried out of the village and drowned in water. Other customs included carrying out the Dedko, bonfires on St John’s Eve and pre-Christmas traditions. The children’s group of FSk Chabenec performs folk programmes at events in Dúbrava and beyond the municipality. Check for possible performance dates during your travel period.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Dúbrava has a regular bus connection with Liptovský Mikuláš. Banícka faleska is accessible by car; free parking is available in front of the mining buildings. As bus and parking arrangements may change, check both before your trip.

When choosing a hotel in Dúbrava, you can use the focus of your trip as a guide: the area offers ways to explore the Low Tatras landscape, the easy nature and walking trail, and the history of mining and the church. This makes it possible to assess Dúbrava as a destination according to the subjects that interest you most in Slovakia.
