Liptovský Ondrej between the Western Tatras, culture and cycling route

Church, manor house and local history passed down through generations

The first written mention of Liptovský Ondrej dates from 1352. Among the notable historical features is St. Andrew’s Church, which dates from the 13th century and contains wall paintings from the period between the late 13th and 15th centuries. At one location, this combines medieval architectural history with preserved artworks from several centuries.

The manor house of the Andreánsky family also reaches far back into the past: according to the oldest sources and based on its architectural elements, it dates from the second half of the 17th century. Manor house No. 59 was also listed in decisions concerning the designation of national cultural monuments. The story “Ondrejská biela pani” refers to the manor house of Pavol Andreánsky, the church and the park surrounding the newly built structure. Another local name leads to the valley of the Trnovec stream, which has been called Filištínska dolina for more than 100 years.

Part of the local art history is now also connected with Budapest: the original Marian altar from 1480 and part of the St. Andrew’s altar from 1512 are located in the Hungarian National Gallery. As recently as the mid-20th century, linen and činovať fabric were woven and baskets were made in Liptovský Ondrej.

Amateur theatre and regional specialities

The amateur theatre tradition dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The first documented performance was the play “Tri groše” in 1910. In 1981, amateur theatre performances were resumed under the direction of the local director, actor and teacher Dušan Uličný senior. Under his direction, amateur actors rehearse a play once a year; the premiere takes place on Christmas Day. Cycling and hiking route to Žiarska dolina

For active exploration, the Liptovský Ondrej–Konská–Žiarska dolina route is designated as both a cycling route and a hiking route. It starts in Liptovský Ondrej at a junction with a green cycling route. The route is 7 kilometres long and has 270 metres of ascent and 41 metres of descent.
