Water landscape at Liptovská Mara

Liptovská Sielnica combines the lakeshore landscape of Liptovská Mara with unusual family experiences and a local history dating back to the Middle Ages. Sielnická zátoka is home to a grassy, stony beach. Various watercraft can be rented there; coffee, beer and quick meals in the form of snacks are also available. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with a simple break on the shore.

The Gréta Resort offers a specific way to experience Liptovská Mara actively. The organised paddleboarding experience is led by a trained instructor and also includes a refreshment. The starting point is at the beach of the Gréta Resort at the end of the picnic meadow in Liptovská Sielnica. Those looking for a guided activity will therefore find a clearly designated starting point and a defined experience format here.

At Rybáreň NA HÁKU, fishing is the focus. The unusual wooden facility with a private pond is located in Liptovská Sielnica. Visitors can catch rainbow trout or salmon trout themselves and have their catch prepared on site or take it home. Baked and smoked trout as well as fresh grilled trout fillets with olive oil and rosemary are also offered.

Family experiences in any weather

Babyland offers a renovated indoor hall with various activities for visits in bad weather. Its centrepiece is a two-storey labyrinth with an obstacle course, slides and tunnels. Visitors can also feed horses and other farm animals there and take part in an entertainment programme. This combines exercise, play and direct contact with animals in a covered facility.

At the Villa Betula animal farm, visitors can see horses, llamas, peacocks and other animals; feeding the animals is also possible. The riding programme includes hippotherapy, trail rides, a basic riding course, rides in the countryside, rental of the riding hall and training with an instructor on one's own horse. Horse riding is available to the public only by telephone arrangement with reception and subject to available appointments on the day of the visit. This restriction is expressly part of planning the visit.

A local history between village, churches and water

The oldest surviving written mention of Sielnica dates from 1256. At that time, the place was royal property and part of the Liptov castle estate belonging to King Béla IV. The history of today's settlement is also connected with the Liptovská Mara reservoir: after the original Liptovská Sielnica was flooded, the new settlement was ceremonially opened on 25 August 1974. It lies approximately 2 km north of the original village.

The Miniskanzen zatopených obcí commemorates the history and culture of thirteen villages that were flooded by Liptovská Mara. Information panels and historical photographs show houses, churches, schools and other buildings from the flooded villages. On the shore of Liptovská Mara, the preserved fragment of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is also clearly visible from a distance. It is a frequently visited site and is considered one of the oldest churches in Liptov.

More recent church history is also present in the village. The Evangelical church in Liptovská Sielnica was consecrated on 9 August 1992, after the construction of a new church and tower had been approved. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built between 1991 and 1997; the parish describes it as one of the newest churches in Liptov. Thus, medieval tradition, the memory of the flooded villages and newer sacred buildings stand side by side.
