Ohrady: Churches, Chapels and Cycling Routes

Sacred history between church and wayside chapel

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen the Protomartyr is considered the oldest building in Ohrady. It was originally a Gothic church from the 15th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was restored before being extended and rebuilt with a transept in 1933. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross. Inside and on the walls, frescoes and decorated glass windows are among its traditional design features.

Another historic landmark stands at the end of Hlavná Street towards Dunajská Streda: the Fehér kép wayside chapel, which probably dates from the late Middle Ages. Its three semicircular niches contain modern-era images from 1991. They depict St. Wendelin, the Madonna and Child, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This clearly distinguishes the chapel from the church's older architectural history. The women's singing group of Ohrady, which performs nativity plays and wedding customs, is also part of the village's living culture.

Meadows, island and protected watercourse

The meadows of Ohradské lúky stretch between the northern boundary of Ohrady and the village of Horné Mýto. Kürti-sziget is a small island on the outskirts of Ohrady. Another distinctive landscape feature is Klátovské rameno, also known as Klátovský potok. It is a right-bank tributary of the Little Danube and, at the same time, a national nature reserve of the same name; its course runs through the cadastral area of Ohrady.

Klátovské rameno is considered a representative example of a meandering lowland river with rare aquatic and wetland communities. The fourth and fifth levels of protection apply to this area. The animals found there include, among others, fire-bellied toads, otters, mute swans, grey herons, coots and white storks.

Cycling on two connected sections

For orientation by bicycle, the marked cycling route section VIII/4 is described particularly specifically. It follows a flat 2 km route from Ohrady to Ohrady Ostrov and is suitable for all types of bicycles. At the same time, VIII/4 connects section VIII/3 with Main Route IX. From Ohrady to Ohrady Ostrov, this section continues along a paved road.

Main Route IX is 14,000 m long. It runs from Kútniky via Trhová Hradská, Horné Mýto and Ohrady Ostrov to Dunajský Klátov. In Ohrady, this allows you to distinguish between the short, flat section VIII/4 and a much longer connection through several villages. The route is therefore particularly interesting when planning a cycling tour in which the specific route is more important than a single attraction.
