Povoda between local history and recurring festivals

Several aspects of the town are clearly relevant when choosing Povoda as a travel destination: a settlement history documented since 1260, regularly organised events, historical traces and an officially designated bus route. The development of the landscape can also be traced through what was once a swampy area. This creates a picture of a town shaped less by individual major sights than by history, local events and specific lines of development.

History from Poda Ety to Povoda

Povoda was established in 1940 through the merger of the districts of Povoda, Čenkesfa and Lidértejed. The Slovak name Povoda has been in use since 1948. The settlement is already documented in a document from 1260 under the name Poda Ety. An entry from 1455 records that King Ladislav V transferred the settlement to Poda-Ethelom. The Póda family owned the settlement until the end of the 18th century. This sequence reveals the town’s different historical phases of naming and ownership without equating the older designation with its present-day name.

The steam mill is also part of the town’s history. It was built in Povoda at the beginning of the 19th century and remained in operation until the beginning of the 20th century. Another clearly identifiable feature of the townscape is Kostol sv. Jána Pavla II., a branch church in Povoda. Those interested in local history will therefore find, alongside the written records, both a historical industrial landmark and a specific religious building as distinct points of reference.

Events and community life

Obecné dni has been regularly organised as a two-day event in August since 2000. Hodové slávnosti take place every year in April on the feast of Saint George. In addition, the Žitnoostrovská výstava and bonifikácia psov are regularly held in Povoda. Povoda is also known for breeding pedigree dogs. The football club FK Povoda is active in the town; in 2007, it won the championship of the 3rd class in the Dunajská Streda region.

Landscape change and documented routes

Zöldfa was historically a swampy area crossed by a small canal via a wooden bridge. The former swamp was drained and is now built up. The place name or area therefore represents a clearly described transformation from a wet landscape into a built-up area.

For travel to the area, the official timetable lists bus route 201 418 on the Dunajská Streda – Kútniky – Povoda route. In addition, a municipal proposal provides for a new paved cycle path from the water-management structure on the Gabčíkovo-Topoľníky canal to Povoda, following the canal’s existing left-bank embankment. This cycle path is described as a project in a proposal; the information therefore confirms a planned connection and does not automatically mean that the route has already been completed.
