Kyselica between waterways and historic traces

Kyselica brings together waterways, cycle routes and local cultural history within a small area. The Vojka nad Dunajom–Kyselica ferry plays a particularly important role: it connects two parts of Kyselica’s cadastral area via the supply canal. The ferry operates year-round at regular 30-minute intervals. This makes it one of the village’s most prominent landmarks and allows the connection across the canal to be experienced directly.

Cycling along the supply canal

For a trip by bicycle, Kyselica offers several clearly distinct route connections. The Báč–Kyselica section of the SacraVelo cycle route was built in 2020. SacraVelo leads from the ferry in Kyselica to the cycling center in the center of Báč. The international EuroVelo EC-6 (001) cycle route runs along the left-bank embankment of the supply canal of the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power plant. On the opposite side, the Danube Cycle Path 001a is a separate route: it connects Čunovo with Gabčíkovo and runs along the right-bank embankment of the same supply canal.

The two embankments are therefore not simply two names for the same path, but belong to different cycle-route connections. In addition, Via Slovakia is listed in Kyselica’s route network as a tourist route between Bratislava and Komárno. The M05-15 Marian pilgrimage route between Báč and Jurová is also included in Kyselica’s route network. For travel planning, this creates a place where various cycling and hiking connections meet in a water-shaped landscape, without merging the individual routes into a single trail.

A water landscape of international importance

The supply canal of the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power plant is used as a waterway of international importance. This gives the surrounding area a distinctly technical character while also defining it through its waterways. In addition, attractive rafting trips are available on the old Danube channel. Kyselica therefore appeals not only to people looking for a cycling route, but also to travelers who want to explore the area via its waterways and different forms of transport.

Church, memorial plaques and local history

The Church of Saint Rosalia is an important cultural landmark in the village. It is dedicated to Saint Rosalia of Palermo. Its history is associated with the end of the plague in 1831, after which it was erected as an expression of gratitude; at the same time, the church was built in 1898. It bears memorial plaques commemorating the municipality’s residents who fell in the First and Second World Wars, in the years 1914–1918 and 1939–1945. These plaques were installed in 1993. Another memorial plaque commemorates the 800th anniversary of the first written mention of Kyselica and was installed in 2005.

Historical references can also be found outside the church. The Vitus Cross at the entrance to Kyselica was erected at the beginning of the 20th century. The cultural center, built in 1938, formerly also served as a venue for the local amateur theater. Together with the church and memorial plaques, it creates a cultural village landscape that makes several historical periods visible without reducing Kyselica to a single attraction.
