Veľké Blahovo: Danube Arms, Nature and Village History

Veľké Blahovo combines a water-shaped landscape with easily accessible railway connections and a manageable yet multifaceted local history. Old Danube Arms and Protected Nature

Remnants of old Danube arms are still visible in Veľké Blahovo and its cadastral territory. Following their course leads to the present-day Danube. This makes the former aquatic landscape tangible not only as a geographical name but also as a visible part of the municipality. The protected area of Plytčiny is also located in the cadastral territory.

The Klátovské rameno National Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral territory of Veľké Blahovo. It is considered a representative example of a meandering lowland river and covers a total of 306.44 hectares. The habitats found there include rare aquatic and wetland communities, alluvial forests, and communities of floating or submerged aquatic plants. The reserve is subject to the fourth and fifth levels of protection. Protected bird species include the kingfisher, mute swan and little grebe.

Another point of natural interest is the Malý Dunaj Water Educational Trail. One of its named stations is the Veľké Blahovo Small Hydroelectric Power Plant. The site features standing water and the nearby mouth of the Čierna voda; both areas are nesting sites for waterfowl. The individual details illustrate different aspects of the same landscape: old river arms as visible remnants of waterways, a protected wetland reserve, and a station where the watercourse, human use and birdlife come together.

Church, Wayside Chapel and Local History

The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity is a prominent feature of the village. The building was constructed in 1761 in the Baroque style and remodeled in the 20th century. Inside, the church has a main altar with a painting of the Most Holy Trinity dating from 1883. The church grounds also contain a family crypt of the Csiba family with a gravestone.

A wayside chapel stands near the Roman Catholic church. The small masonry structure has a triangular floor plan. Its semicircular niches contain polychrome images of saints. For a visit to the village, the chapel therefore offers a different detail from the larger church building. Ján Bihari is also associated with Veľké Blahovo: he was born here on 21 October 1764 and was a musician.

Railway Station and Connections

Veľké Blahovo has had a railway station since 1895. Railway line 131 between Bratislava and Dunajská Streda runs through the village. In addition, Veľké Blahovo is connected to the district capital Dunajská Streda and the surrounding municipalities by bus and train services.
