Lehnice: Manor Houses, Churches and an Easy MTB Loop

Lehnice between the Lowland and Žitný ostrov

Lehnice is situated in the Podunajská nížina, in the central part of Žitný ostrov. Manor-house architecture with two historical layers

A particular focus is provided by the manor houses of the Benyovszky family. The new manor house was completed in 1930 and built in a romantic pseudo-Gothic style based on the model of English and Scottish manor houses. The architecture therefore represents a deliberately historicising design language that clearly differs from viewing a building solely in functional terms.

Of the older manor house of the Benyovszky family, the eastern section with an octagonal tower and the remains of the adjoining wings at ground-floor level have been preserved. This creates a chronological and architectural contrast for orientation: on one side is the new manor house, completed in 1930, with its pseudo-Gothic appearance; on the other, preserved structural elements point to the older complex. Both aspects are independent cultural themes of Lehnice.

Parkland and sacred details

The park around the Benyovszky family manor house covers 29 hectares. This figure makes the park an independent component of the townscape and complements the architectural perspective with an extensive landscape area. Lehnice can therefore be understood not only through individual architectural forms, but also through the relationship between manor house and park.

Sacred details provide another layer. A statue of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary stands on the church’s decorative marble altar. An older stone relief is also set into the outer enclosing wall of the church sanctuary. Details like these give the church architecture historical depth without reducing it to a mere date.

Church history and an easy cycling loop

The more recent Catholic parish church in Veľký-Lég is also part of the historical context. It was built in 1679 on the site of a Gothic church. This reveals another architectural transition: a newer church building stands on a site with an older Gothic predecessor.
