Between Danube Floodplains and Cultural Heritage

Medveďov combines protected wetlands, a prominent cycling connection and historical landmarks within a clearly defined local setting. The cadastral territory is part of the internationally significant Dunajské luhy wetland. At the same time, a historic church, a memorial and a regularly scheduled cultural event are among the locality’s cultural features. Wetlands with Special Plant Life

Opatovské jazierko is a nature reserve in the cadastral territory of Medveďov. Its habitat includes a floodplain forest of willows and poplars, where protected plant and animal species occur. The name therefore refers not only to a body of water, but also to a protected landscape area whose floodplain forest helps define the character of the area.

Another defining landscape is Kľúčovské rameno. The area lies within the cadastral territories of the municipalities of Medveďov, Sap and Kľúčovec. It belongs to Part IV of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area and also to the Dunajské luhy Ramsar site. Kľúčovské rameno is a naturally flooded former river channel with well-developed reed stands of Phragmites australis and adjacent riverbank stands consisting mainly of white willows (Salix alba).

The botanical diversity is specifically documented: Kľúčovské rameno is home to 240 plant species, including protected species such as Najas minor and Trapa natans.

Cycling Route, Danube and Border Location

A 73.5 km-long cycling route runs through the Žitný ostrov landscape via Medveďov and connects Dunajská Streda with Komárno. The section passing through Medveďov is almost completely flat and runs along state roads and the Danube embankment. For planning a cycling trip, the documented character of the route is therefore particularly important: you can assess a longer connection without having to expect any significant climb.

In the section of the Danube bordering Medveďov, a carp-fishing area named “Dunaj č. 2” is designated. Medveďov is also a border crossing to Hungary. Church, Memorial and Community Culture

The village is home to the Church of Saint Anne, which is considered a cultural monument of Medveďov. It was built around the year 1800 and restored after a fire in 1855. The sequence of construction, fire and restoration gives the building a comprehensible historical context.

The local cultural landscape also includes a memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. In Medveďov, it is among the most touristically valuable local sites. The community day “Deň obce” is scheduled as a regularly held cultural event from 25 to 30 July.
