Štvrtok Na Ostrove has a cultural and historical profile shaped by religious architecture, religious artworks, roadside crosses and local cultural traditions. For a trip to Slovakia focused on architectural history and folk culture, the town offers several clearly distinct themes. Medieval architectural features, monuments at named locations and recurring cultural events all stand alongside one another.

Church Architecture and Religious Artworks

The Roman Catholic Church of St James the Greater is one of Slovakia’s national cultural monuments. Its foundations date from the mid-13th century. The main nave is Late Romanesque; the columns were added later. This building history combines a medieval origin with later alterations, making the church a concrete focal point for a culturally oriented stay. House No. 64, known as the “Ľudový dom,” offers a different architectural accent: the residential house dates from 1927, and its stylistic architectural design has been preserved.

The Trinity Column stands in the park by the church. The village’s residents had it erected in 1900; it was restored in 2000 using funds from the local government. A group of figures depicting the Holy Trinity is set on the column. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand on the pedestal, and a group of figures of the Madonna and Saint Anne is in a niche. In front of the cultural centre stands a statue of Saint Florian, a polychrome stone sculpture from 1893 on a tall column. Thus, a depiction featuring several saintly figures and a single, brightly coloured statue of a saint stand alongside one another as distinct artworks.

Roadside Crosses and Remembrance

The roadside crosses also differ in their histories and depictions. A sandstone cross erected by Mihály Sill in 1799 stands in front of house No. 133. The Fehér kereszt in the field towards Bratislava was erected by Jakub Sill and his wife Žofia Füle in 1913; a statue of Saint Anne stands on its pedestal. Another roadside cross from 1913 is located in the courtyard of house No. 48. It was moved from its original location by the roadside; a stone Pietà group is set on its pedestal. The Fájdalmas Kereszt, also a roadside cross, is one of the historical monuments of Štvrtok Na Ostrove.

Another focus is remembrance of those killed in war. The monument to those who fell in the First World War, 1914–1918, stands in the park behind the cultural centre and was restored in 2000. Its commemorative purpose differs from that of the religious artworks and roadside crosses; together, these places show different aspects of local commemorative culture.

Folk Culture and Recurring Events

Cultural programmes are part of the town’s profile, alongside its architecture and monuments. Since 2005, the Csemadok organisation of Štvrtok na Ostrove has held “Dom hier” monthly for children aged 6 to 15. Participants learn about forgotten folk crafts and old folk customs. If you would like to plan a stay around this event, check the participation requirements in advance.

Another event is Mother Tongue Month, held every November by the local Csemadok organisation. It includes literature, essay and grammar competitions for young people. “Dom hier” thus combines crafts and customs with a monthly programme for a clearly specified age group; the November event focuses on language and competitions. If you are planning a trip for this, check the exact dates and participation requirements in advance. This makes it possible to assess Štvrtok Na Ostrove as a destination based on whether you are more interested in historical architecture and places of remembrance or in the cultural traditions described here.
