Šamorín – Cycling, Culture and x-bionic® sphere

Šamorín combines the international Danube Cycle Path with a forest park, distinctive religious buildings, regional history and the x-bionic® sphere sports and leisure centre. This gives the town a range of attractions for a trip to Slovakia: you can combine cycle paths and floodplain landscapes with culture, equestrian sports, wellness or culinary events.

Cycling between the Hrušov Reservoir and the forest park

The international Danube Cycle Path runs along the dam of the Hrušov Reservoir on the outskirts of Šamorín. From there, signs guide cyclists into the town and onward to POMLÉ Forest Park.

POMLÉ Forest Park is a 10-hectare municipal forest park situated around a former branch of the Danube. An educational trail there conveys the natural values of floodplain forests. Cultural events are regularly held in the forest park’s amphitheatre.

Churches, the Synagogue and the Town’s History

The Reformed Church in Šamorín is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful churches on Žitný ostrov. Another important building is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built according to plans by the architect J. G. Altenburg and completed in 1778. Its richly decorated late Baroque interior includes ceiling frescoes, a high altar and four side altars. For a cultural stay, this creates a clear contrast between a Reformed church regarded as particularly old and beautiful and a documented late Baroque church interior.

The synagogue in Šamorín was built in 1912. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements with motifs from the Near East; the windows are decorated with coloured glass. Thanks to At Home Gallery, the synagogue now serves as an exhibition space for works of art and an occasional concert hall. The Mestský vlastivedný dom presents the traditions of Šamorín and tools used in urban crafts. The building also offers groups an interactive gold-panning presentation.

Sport, Riding and Relaxation at x-bionic® sphere

The x-bionic® sphere complex includes an Olympic equestrian centre. The sports and leisure centre offers suitable conditions for professional and amateur sports, as well as for relaxation and dining. Throughout the year, x-bionic® sphere hosts numerous national and international competitions in show jumping, endurance riding and dressage. Visitors can ride there, and riding courses for beginners are also offered.

The complex includes swimming pools, a wellness area, a cinema and a bar. Its range of activities therefore extends beyond equestrian sports. Those who want to combine cultural and landscape experiences with sport or relaxation in Šamorín will find several clearly distinct forms of experience in one place.

Traditions, Culinary Delights and Wine

Šamorín hosts the Dni Svätého Štefana event series. The programme includes, among other things, goulash cooking, langos baking and craft workshops for children. The festival bears the subtitle “Chute, vína, tradície” and combines culinary delights, wine and traditions based on the values of traditional culture. During the two-day festival, 20 recognised domestic and international winemakers present themselves. The festival takes place every year on the last Friday and Saturday in August.
