Spišská Teplica: Church, Calvary and Protected Landscape
Those considering Spišská Teplica as a travel destination will find several clearly distinct themes there: ecclesiastical heritage, a municipal museum, a Calvary site with views, and a protected wetland. This makes it possible to get to know the place from various perspectives without reducing it to a single attraction.
Church and Municipal Museum
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1875 on the site of a Gothic church dating from the 14th century. A historic stone tabernacle has been preserved in the church to this day. Both details give the building its own historical depth: the present church dates from the 19th century, while the site also points to an older ecclesiastical history. A second perspective on the local history is offered by the Spišská Teplica Municipal Museum. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of Spišská Teplica and its Cistercian heritage. The museum is open year-round to registered visitors. In addition to the permanent exhibition, it provides space for creative workshops, lectures, exhibitions, discussion groups and seminars. For your visit, therefore, not only the collection itself is relevant, but also the different ways in which the museum conveys history and culture.Calvary Site with Views of the High Tatras
The Cistercian-style Calvary site has 14 stations, including a chapel. It is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and visitors by car. Above the Calvary site, there are views of Spišská Teplica, the surrounding area and the peaks of the High Tatras. This makes the site both a religiously and architecturally significant destination and a vantage point that extends the connection to the area beyond the immediate built-up surroundings.Spišskoteplické slatiny and Circular Route
The natural side of Spišská Teplica is also clearly defined. The Spišskoteplické slatiny area belongs to the Natura 2000 network, covers approximately 24 hectares and is located in three separate places within Spišská Teplica. The designated area is subject to the fourth level of protection. Among the most important protected habitats is a habitat of European importance consisting of base-rich fens. Those interested in protected areas and special landscapes will therefore find a specifically named habitat here, rather than merely a general natural setting. A circular route from Poprad through the Lopušná dolina valley via Spišská Teplica and Svit back to Poprad passes through the village. Along the way, the circular route crosses Spišská Teplica as far as the agricultural cooperative; the ascent then begins. There are several opportunities for refreshments along the circular route, as well as benches and informative educational boards. This route therefore makes it possible to connect different sections of the village and landscape, while the Calvary site is additionally geared towards pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. For a broader selection of places, you can also consider Lucivna, Nová Lesná, Liptovská Teplicka, Svit, Velký Slavkov, Gánovce, Spišský Štiavnik and Strba. For the broader travel overview: Okres Poprad.
