Svit: Nature, Cycle Paths and Winter Experiences
Svit combines short routes into nature with insights into geology, the history of the town and winter sports. Those looking for accommodation in the town will find a wide range of attractions in the surrounding area: a 13-kilometre nature trail, a geopark featuring rocks from Slovakia, cycle and inline skating paths along the Poprad, and the Svit–Lopušná dolina ski resort. This makes it possible to tailor a stay according to the season and interests, combining outdoor activity, landscapes and culture.
Nature Trails and Landscapes Around Svit
The Kimbiark nature trail is 13 kilometres long. It begins at the primary school on Komenského Street in Svit, leads through Svit’s historic district to Podskalka, over Bôrik Mountain to Mengusovce, and then back again. The route therefore connects several clearly defined sections and offers an opportunity to experience the area around Svit along a longer trail.
A shorter option is provided by the Baba nature reserve in the immediate vicinity of the town of Svit. It covers 205 hectares and protects rare plant and animal communities on dolomitic bedrock. A 4-kilometre nature trail runs through the area. When choosing accommodation, this creates a direct link between staying in Svit and visiting a natural area with both landscape and geological features.
Geopark, Town History and Special Places
The Svit Geopark displays 43 rocks from the surrounding area and further afield. One of the notable exhibits is a fossilised fragment of a tree estimated to be 22 million years old. Pupils can compare a geological map featuring rocks from across Slovakia and touch rock samples. The geopark is therefore suitable for a visit that involves not only looking but also hands-on exploration.
The town’s history includes the so-called Baťova červená kolónia. Its construction began in connection with the construction of the Baťa factory, to provide housing for workers and factory employees. Another architectural landmark is the Church of St Joseph the Worker. It was consecrated on 6 July 1991 and has a large interior with an octagonal floor plan. The church and the associated parish building are located on the right bank of the Poprad River.
Cycling, Inline Skating and Mountain Biking
The Svit–Poprad cycling and inline skating path runs along the Poprad River and its tributary, the Mlynica. It is suitable for beginners and more advanced skaters as well as cyclists. Another route is called “Cyklochodníkom do Lopušnej doliny” and leads from Poprad through Svit into Lopušná dolina. Along the way, it offers views of the High Tatras and the peaks of the Kozie Chrbty.
The HORAL MTB Maratón is also part of Svit’s sporting profile. It has been held in Svit continuously since 2000. The family route is 18 kilometres long and includes 180 metres of elevation gain. This provides various forms of cycling, including a riverside route and a mountain-bike distance explicitly designated as a family route.
Winter in Lopušná dolina
The Svit–Lopušná dolina ski resort has 1.8 kilometres of ski slopes, all of which are covered by technical snowmaking. Evening skiing is possible on 930 metres of illuminated slopes. There are also 3 kilometres of groomed cross-country skiing trails. Those choosing a winter holiday according to their preferred activity can therefore distinguish between alpine skiing, illuminated evening slopes and cross-country skiing.
Swimming Pool as an Additional Activity
The Plaváreň in Svit has a 25-metre pool with a water depth of 120 to 180 centimetres. Visitors can also use steam baths, a fitness room, massage services and a snack bar. This complements the outdoor activities with a dedicated place for swimming and other documented facilities.
