Spišské Bystré: Church, Nature Reserve and Kubašok Ski Centre

Spišské Bystré combines historical landmarks, an exceptional nature reserve and winter sports facilities with clearly documented travel connections via Poprad. This gives you different aspects of the village to consider when planning your trip: religious buildings and monuments, the landscape of Hranovnická dubina, a blue-marked hiking route, and Kubašok Ski Centre, which offers lessons for complete beginners.

Church and Chapels in the Villagescape

The most important historical landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of St Michael. It was originally Gothic and dates from 1306. It was later remodelled in 1706 and extended in the Neo-Gothic style in 1926. Several phases of development can therefore be traced in this building without losing sight of its original date.

Other religious buildings are scattered in various locations throughout the village and along the roads leading out of Spišské Bystré. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in the 19th century. It stood behind the village and is now located on SNP Street. The Chapel of St Barbara also dates from the 19th century; it stands on the road to Hranovnica. The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was likewise built in the 19th century and stands next to the church in the village centre. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is located on the road towards Kravany.

Hranovnická dubina Nature Reserve

Since 1966, Spišské Bystré has been home to the 69-hectare Hranovnická dubina Nature Reserve. It contains the northernmost original stand of sessile oak. The specific subject of protection distinguishes this area from an ordinary green space: the focus is a documented original oak stand with a particularly northern distribution.

The monument at Foľuš is also part of the village landscape. The wooden structure has a water wheel and was used for fulling cloth. This monument therefore points to a historical craft activity and complements the religious buildings with another aspect of the village’s history.

Ski Lessons and Hiking Route

Kubašok Ski Centre has a ski and snowboard school. For complete beginners, lessons begin at the children’s lift. After a few hours, they move on to a larger lift. This sequence describes the structure of the lessons more precisely than a general reference to a ski area: beginners start at a children’s lift before moving on to a larger lift.

For hiking, a blue-marked route begins in the centre of Spišské Bystré and leads south out of the village. The documented starting point is therefore directly in the village centre; the route continues along a blue marking in a southerly direction.

Travel via Poprad

Spišské Bystré has no direct railway connection. The nearest railway station is in Poprad. Regular regional bus services operated by SAD Poprad are available for onward travel from Poprad Bus Station and from the Dom kultúry and Nové mesto stops. Travellers planning to use public transport can therefore combine the train journey with a bus connection from Poprad, without assuming that Spišské Bystré has its own railway station.
